Russia to Target U.S. European Shield

Russia Prepares to ‘Destroy’ U.S. Shield, Medvedev Says

Nov. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev ordered the military to prepare to “destroy” the command capability of the planned U.S. missile-defense system in Europe.

Russia may also station strike missiles on its southern and western flanks, including Iskander rockets in the Kaliningrad exclave between Poland and Lithuania, both members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the European Union, Medvedev said on state television today.

“I have ordered the armed forces to develop measures to ensure, if necessary, that we can destroy the command and control systems” of the U.S. shield,’’ Medvedev said. “These measures are appropriate, effective and low-cost.”

Russia has warned the U.S.-led plan may provoke a new arms race and upset a strategic balance in the region by threatening its nuclear deterrent capability. The U.S. is ignoring Russia’s concerns about positioning parts of the shield in eastern Europe and “accelerating” its development, Medvedev said.

Spain became the fourth European nation agreeing to participate directly in the missile defense program, intended to protect against attacks from adversaries such as Iran. President Barack Obama pursued plans for the Europe-wide system in 2009, and the administration has also obtained agreements with Poland, Romania and Turkey to host elements of the shield.

It's about more than missiles.

The underlying issue is the continued independence of Poland and the three Baltic from Russland.

Also, I have wondered if Germany will ever want/ask/demand for Kalingrad to be Koenigsberg again.

Huh. Being able to do it is one thing, but coming out and actually saying it, if the translation is correct, is somewhat inflammatory.

Ivan's getting sick of not even being considered second best. I think we should consider them more of a threat than PRC, who have a lot more to lose in terms of their economic progress.

Do Russia really have to worry about the shield? I had assumed that it was more against emerging Iran type threats, rather than being able to counter a full on old school ICBM threat with penetration aids etc.

I would have thought Russia could just shrug it off as just a modern take on the limited ABM installations from the cold war that were never intended to counter the overall MAD stalemate/philosophy?

Or Tsar Vladimir (I, III, or IV depending on how you count them) could be planning to restore to Russia the lands held in the time of Tsar Nicholas II.

That is the fear of Poland, the Baltic states, and the Ukraine... which is why the US/NATO missile shield is attractive to them.

Seeing as Vlad is an agent of the KGB, rather than a western politician, and that in Russia the macho man image is seemingly quite central to male life, It surprises me why some people are surprised by Russian willy-waving. Whether or not there is any substance behind the words is yet to be seen, but, many of you seem to get a bit nostalgic for the olden days... Let those guys dream too

Jamesdevice,

Limanova has stated that she was gesturing at technical workers behind the camera who were trying to distract her. She thought she was off camera.

She has now been fired.
