Airborne Sniper protection for Olympic 2012

London 2012 Olympics: Snipers in helicopters during Games | Mail Online

Then again take a leaf out of the LAPD ASTRO Division Homeland Security as in their snipers on Tyler outboard mount equipped AS350B2.

If it's on the ground in cabbage kit it's Army.

If it's in the air it must be RAF.

Well done that messenger of truth and accuracy.

Wouldn't they be better employed on the GB shooting team?

Amusing to see a Harpoon captioned as a SAM.

I have drawn my Lee-Enfield #4 rifle (iron sights) from the armoury & have popped along to Specsavers.

I am now declaring myself Combat Ready & able to dispense sudden death & carnage from the sky.

Where do I sign up?

Let's hope they remember to track and balance the helicopter before the day comes.

I would have thought that the gun in the nose of an Apache would do the job

Not necessarily from what I hear.

pulse, you missed the sacrasm.

The meja invariably identify anything in cabbage kit as Army which is why the RAF has a large ROYAL AIR FORCE on its kit and why they managed to get FRESCO tabards with the name on them too.

The corollary is, as I said, if it flies . . .

Get it?

Deliberatly missing the point - I would have thought that there would be plenty of tall structures around the Olympic park to accomodate a legion of long haired blokes with long barreled musketry? Mind you, Harpoon might be usefull at the sailing and the rowing!

What is the range from the London eye, and how long will it take for the sniper to get up to the top on a normal punters trip as I cannot see the Uk PLC paying for the whole thing let alone a helicopter

Methinks someone somewhere is getting a tad carried away here. The protection of the games is a policing operation, rather than a military one. I'll have CAP and SAM cover as a proportionate response at a push, but what can't be covered by police marksmen in terms of rifle cover will be pretty scant. CAP612 if I recall correctly specifically prohibits the firing of a weapon or the launching of any munitions from an aircraft.

If it isn't a good idea for the cops to do it during peacetime I can't seem how it suddenly becomes a good idea for the mil to do it, regardless of skill level.

They did not use armed POLICE to assault the Embassy in London where hostages had been taken. HMG used the SAS be to carry out the assault because they had been trained specifically for such events.

I know that. However, it required a very definite handover of command, and back. MACP is there to be utilised, it is just a bit more complex than the article suggests.

Trouble is that most Countries in the World will be sending Teams - and most Countries have their fair share of Political Malcontents. One only has to add into the equation Fundamentalist Religious and Political aspirations manipulated by Bigots to gain a sense of the problems facing those planning for the event.

To be fair the Prime Minister at the time was, apart from Winnie, the only one since WWII with any balls.

I have no doubt that a crack team of outreach councilors, or somesuch, will be on hand to engage and empathise with terrorists and hostage takers during the Olympics.

Personally I'd contract out security to Mossad.

Willard

Agree re Maggie. Would any current Politician have the balls to sign over power to the military and give the "go" today ?

Re "I have no doubt that a crack team of outreach councilors, or somesuch, will be on hand to engage and empathise with terrorists and hostage takers during the Olympics."

Don't forget the NGO's and all the other do gooders who will want to be involved providing life sustaining support to them.

"Personally I'd contract out security to Mossad."

How about SAS for the assault and Mossad to follow up and dispatch any others that were involved in the planning etc. After all, we need a "new" bunch of "heroes" who were "the 2nd person on the balcony"

.
