Thanks.

Let's hope the Gov't didn't "give" it to them for nothing.

It is interesting how this thread can encapsulate the on going topics of other current threads that are running on perhaps totally different subjects.

SAS help in leading the hunt for Gaddafi
, this is then translated by our illustrious journalists into...
SAS lead the hunt for Gaddafi!
Why....

The answer I guess sums up the debate on what our journalists are doing... Will the truth get the big headline? Will the truth sell the story?

I accept the journalist working for a media that specialises in a specific subject may well not lower themselves to doctor these types of event but the larger mass media organisations surely want the spectacular, the headline grabbing event that brings publicity to their product.

Is the SAS leading the hunt or are they giving advice to the leadership who are organising the hunt? I have my thoughts which perhaps are different to all of the above, but NEVER let the truth get in the way of a good story.

I mean NO disrespect to the excellent specialist journalists that frequent this forum and apologies if the above has done that and hopefully we are still on topic.

I see that Tripoli has still not been completely 'liberated' and our man Gadaffi is still roaming the streets somewhere, some place.

No problem, 500N.

On the subject of cost others have been asking questions. It appears that they are supplied under grants.

Uncorrected Evidence - Operations in Lybia

Q36 Chair: How much is this body armour worth? That may seem a very small question in the overall cost of all of this, but I am just wondering who provided it and who paid for it.

Dr Fox: It came from contingent stocks, which won’t affect current UK operations. As for the price tag, I am unable to give you that, but I shall look to see what it is. I am not sure if Mr Watkins is able to do that. He is very good with numbers.

Mr Watkins: I don’t have a precise figure, Mr Chairman. This is basically armour that we had in stock against our potential needs. We are in the process of replacing that armour as part of our routine replacement programme so it was available to be given to the opposition in the way we are saying. I can’t give you a precise value on it at the moment, and indeed it would be quite difficult to value it anyway, because it is not something that you can put on eBay and seek bids for.

Chair: You can buy Harriers on eBay.

Additional body armour sent

House of Lords Written Ministerial Statements 30 June 2011

I can now confirm that the following additional equipment has been granted to the NTC for the sole use of the civilian police force.

5,000 sets of body armour; .....

Under the HM Treasury guidelines set out in Managing Public Money these items are grants and grants in aid to the NTC and not gifts. Therefore Crown immunity applies to the supply of body armour and an export licence is not required.

Thanks and interesting.

I like this bit
"I can’t give you a precise value on it at the moment, and indeed it would be quite difficult to value it anyway,"

Cost would be cost of procurement of the actual item plus all the costs associated with buying it, storing it. I love the way Gov't's come out with Big Aid figures when a fair chunk of it is giving goods.

I still hope that $$$ were received for the Armour. I gather it's needed.

"Missing Aircraft"

Hi all,

Did the Dutch Navy ever get their "impounded" Lynx back?

Cost wasn't the question, value was. If it's old kit that has been in the back of a warehouse for ages then it probably isn't worth very much.

News:
Libya Suspends foreign minister for meeting with Israeli counterpart.
Libya Suspends Foreign Minister Over Meeting With Israel’s Top Diplomat - WSJ

May be behind a paywall, so here's a summary:
Libyan Foreign Minister Najla Mangoush was dismissed Monday over a meeting she held last week with her Israeli counterpart Eli Cohen, amid ballooning political fallout in both Jerusalem and Tripoli over the decision by Israel’s top diplomat to reveal that the two ministers held a “historic” sit-down last week in Rome.
Maybe he should have kept his mouth shut.
Following Cohen’s announcement of the meeting on Sunday, which was met with outrage in Libya, Prime Minister Abdul Hamid al-Dbeibeh suspended Mangoush from her role and said an investigation panel would be formed to look into the meeting. Libya’s foreign ministry denied any formal talks were held with Cohen as scattered protests broke out in Tripoli and other western Libyan towns.
On Monday Dbeibeh fired Mangoush, Reuters reported, and a Libyan foreign ministry official confirmed Mangoush fled to Turkey out of concern for her safety.
The general population is not pleased.
Dbeibeh’s decision to suspend Mangoush suggested that he was not aware of the meeting. However, two senior Libyan government officials told The Associated Press the prime minister knew about the talks between his foreign minister and the Israeli chief diplomat. One of the officials said Dbeibeh gave the green light for the meeting last month when he was on a visit to Rome. The prime minister’s office arranged the encounter in coordination with Mangoush, he said.
The second official said the Mangoush-Cohen meeting lasted for about two hours and Mangoush briefed the prime minister directly after her return to Tripoli. The official said the meeting was tied to US-brokered efforts to have Libya join a series of Arab countries establishing diplomatic relations with Israel. The official said normalization of relations between Libya and Israel was first discussed in a meeting between Dbeibeh and CIA Director William Burns, who visited the Libyan capital in January.
The Libyan premier gave initial approval for joining the US-brokered Abraham Accords, but he was concerned about public backlash in a country known for its support for the Palestinian cause, the official said. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity for their safety.
