I must admit, before hearing the opinions of other ppruners, I was thinking along the same lines. I often think back to my Brother's assertion, back in 1975, that one Phantom could do the job of a 1,000 Bomber raid in 1943. I think he was referring to a nuclear device though.

Indeed, my own analogy is we reach a stage where all capabilities are met by a single midget jet carried by the CAS in his Briefcase which he eventually could end up mislaying on the train home one day.
