Nimrod r1 xv249
Just watching XV249 on the final climbout from Waddington as it departs to a new life at Cosford. End of an era for 51 Sqn, but hopefully just the beginning of a new period in the Squadron's history. Sad day for all those who have served on the various marks of the Nimrod, but at least XW664/XV249 have found new homes and not ending up in a scrapyard.

Good memories
Lurked here for a while but now been moved to post! Worked on XV249 during her conversion at Woodford, and many times since. A sad day, will need to take the family for a visit to Cosford museum methinks.
A few snaps of XV249 leaving RAF Waddington. All the best, Mike

Good luck landing at Cosford! It's awfully short.
The option to send an MR2 to the RAF Museum at Cosford was firmly stamped on for safety reasons; short runway, gross landing performance, lack of experience using 'short' runways (nobody left who'd been at Stanley). There was an option for a road move, though.
Oh, and all the best for the future, Mike!

All the best in your new job Mike, it was good fun flying with you over the years and spending some memorable and not so memorable dets together. No doubt I will catch up with you from time to time at the Association gatherings, especially as I'm now a fully paid up member. Steve

The shortest runway available in the NDS was, I think, 6000'; in order to practise landing on a 3700' piece of tarmac with a ravine at one end and a railway embankment at the other end I suspect that you had to squint a bit! Or try some 1664 before hand!
