Afghanistan - French Jet Down

French fighter jet crashes in Afghanistan

  • [*]

A FRENCH Mirage fighter jet has crashed in southern Afghanistan while accompanying a convoy, but both pilots ejected safely.

French military spokesman Colonel Thierry Burkhard said it was the first time a French plane had crashed in Afghanistan in the nearly 10 years France had been taking part in the international military operation there.
Burkhard told The Associated Press that the crash today was "not due to shooting by insurgents" and that technical problems were suspected.
He said the two pilots ejected and were being taken to Kandahar, where they are based.
He said the convoy, in a zone monitored by Italian forces, came under fire from insurgents but had no details of the fighting.

Got in there before I even landed. I called in his mayday call and relayed his messages from the ground until A-10s arrived on scene. They banged out in a fairly flat and benign part of the country, glad to hear they are ok.
3 hours, out of several hundred, well spent.
