Check out the Times obits. Nick Goodhart has died. Dreamed up the Mirror landing sight for Carriers. Top gliding man etc. Taught me to glide. Legend.

What else can be said?

Flew the(our) Auster G-AIPR to the deck of an aircarft carrier. Unfortunately she is being refurbed at the moment. I will see if I can find the picture of IPR.

Total legend.

At Lasham on 10 May 1959 he declared a goal of Portmoak in Scotland and achieved a record goal flight of 579.36 km in a Slingsby Skylark 3 at an average speed of 90.7 km/h. This is still the UK 20 metre goal distance record and the speed record for a 500 km goal flight.

Remember reading his book, 2 or 3 climbs in CuNims, talked of 6 inches plus of ice on his wings

RIP

For those who don't subscribe to The Times, here is a link to the Daily Telegraph's obituary for Rear-Admiral Nicholas Goodhart - Telegraph

To echo Hammer Head Too's opening sentence, a quote from a subsequent comment on the obituary reads "They don't make 'em like that anymore....". Indeed they don't.

Did see a TV documentary, not so long ago, where the concept of the Mirror Deck Landing Sight was demonstrated. Think it might have been done by the late Nick Goohart himself ??? Quote It was first demonstrated by borrowing a handbag mirror from the Captain’s secretary. Suitably angled and with a horizontal datum line drawn across it, it reflected the tip of her lipstick tube, placed a little in front of it. By keeping the reflected image right on this datum line, an approach path could be followed by eye right down to the desk top
