Badge recognition assistance

Troops , Just quickie , I am trying to find out more about my Grandfathers service history. He was a Nav on Avro Ansons 43-45 and whilst rummaging through his bits and bobs I came across this badge stuck to his Nav Brevet.
Does anyone have any idea from whence it came , I have trawled and trawled without success , but then I'm no internet genius

Its a coat of arms shape with motto ET-VIRTUTEM -ET MUSAS
at the bottom
then above bottom part of shield is red with 3 yellow diagonal stripes going from top right to bottom left
above that is a 3 mast sailing ship in gold on blue background

It appears to be a motto used more than once:

A similar badge..

ET VIRTUTEM ET MUSAS Badge on eBay (end time 26-Nov-10 22:05:36 GMT)

A school with the same motto..

Mill Hill School - About Mill Hill - The Coat of Arms of Mill Hill School

But I haven't worked out what the latin translates to as yet...

No idea what the badge is (without seeing it) but I think the latin translates as 'and valour and song' or 'and virtue and music' or something of that ilk. I believe musas is the accusative plural of muses. Good chance I'm wrong though.

I'll have a go at "Both by valour and by learning", but havent done much Latin since I passed it at O-Level in 1964! Probably the guy's old school prefect's badge or something similar. Not a lot of help, just my two-pennorth!
