Well a starting point would be the fact that there is not and never has been a Nimrod R3.

Apparently, there isn't a Nimrod MRA4 either

There have been 3 R's though

Effectively, they are both ELINT/COMINT aircraft...

It could be argued that the R1 is a strategic aircraft, while that might be argued as tactical...

Obviously the roles the R1 fills are highly classified so you'll not really find out the difference.

Biggus

Thanks for spoiling my effort at humour. I somehow feel that not only swapping the 3 and R, but changing it to a 4 would not have been quite as effective!

Happy Christmas

That Sentinel didn't last long either, no wonder VAT is going up to 20% shortly.

Cool

Have a look at Spyflight.co.uk that should get you started. Plus Cryptome.com plus google Echelon. If you work your way through that lot, you won't surface untill 2011!

Have a look at Spyflight.co.uk ...
Hmm, his Latest News page states "Latest news will be updated in 2010." Methinks he is leaving it a tad late...

Yes I am, I see no need for the obscure identities. Gary Chrimble and a Merry Rudolph to you.

You are correct, it does need updating, but Cyril should find the info he wants at that site.

I wondered about a Nimrod X, then realised that it would be turned around to read X Nimrod and that about sums it up.

You can't help feeling that this is the AEW 3 debacle all over again and that the best part of 20 years have elapsed (they were talking about the next generation Nimrod R when I was at Wyton in 1990).

Talk about a licence to print money. I wonder if it's ever considered - i.e. talking to the people doing the job.

They could have engaged Blue Peter who are quite good at creating all sorts of interesting things from rubbish.

There again, no knighthoods to be earned on BP.
