HMS Illustrious

BBC News - HMS Ocean saved from ship defence spending cuts

Illustrious will run on to 2014 after which Ocean will be our only carrier.

With Sea Kings going in 2015 and doubt over the marinised Merlin I wonder what helos will she carry

At least this means that the refit to Illustrious now being completed will not have been as waste of money. Also without the work on refitting Ocean, Devonport would have had little to look forward to especially with the Batch 3 Type 22's being deleted. After that though the Dockyard and Naval Base face a bleak future!

Everything I have ever read about Ocean, single prop shaft, designed to civil specs, sewage sysytem inadequate and impossible to access to maintain/repair, a generally worn out ship that has been flogged to death already, etc,etc.....has been BAD/DAMNING.

No surprise that we are keeping Ocean and getting rid of Illustious then...

I don't think you can fly AV-8Bs off of Ocean either!

Isn't it funny that, after every war that Britain WON, the problem was what do do with the huge numbers of aircraft/tanks/ships etc. An embarrassment of riches.

Checkboard,
"Huge numbers of ships".
That doesn't describe the navy I've been in for over 30 years. (laugh)

Cheers

Fantastic, so another 4 frigates and a carrier gone, but the headline is "Ocean Saved" - for what?! Parties? TV Docudramas? Cos its big?

Alas, the real headline and cut in capability is being missed again, and joe public will be completely oblivious, and only see the positive spin.
