Here the challenge was to uncover the compelling human interest story behind the technical nature of the material, spanning a 17 year period, while effectively communicating the scientific aspects of the project and its impact on the greater defence of Australia.
Careful research was required to piece together a story structure which was accurate and which drew on the memories of many different participants with many different perspectives.
Several interviewees were highly technical and had not appeared on camera before, which required careful guidance to deliver genuine, fluent statements in line with the story structure, as well as illuminating new and unexpected perspectives that enhanced the original script profoundly.
Filmed in full high definition, this 35-minute film portrays the development challenges, eclectic team and exceptional outcomes of this system, while effectively handling the delicate balance required to cover topics such as defence contracts and classified military technology."

The F111 seems to be the kind of Aircraft, (especially in regard to Australia) that was such a good design that with continuous updates it would never be obsolete.
It's 'replacement' cannot fly as far, or as fast or carry the same weapons load.

Although I agree with what you are saying, you must be realistic.
Australia is the only operator of a 50-year old design. Despite its unsurpassed capabilities, it is just TOO expensive to support.
As sad as it is, end of story.

IF the 35min F-111 doco video is viewed online you can find the .MP4 file in your Internet Explore File Cache at 335Mbs. Other browsers? Dunno.

Shades of Banana Jet/Tonka all over again.
As others have touched upon though operating such dated aircraft, no matter how new some of the bit hanging off it might be, is not going to be cheap.
It's 'replacement' cannot fly as far, or as fast or carry the same weapons load.

Its range and speed is as good as its escort, its potential weapons load is only as good as its avionics, and its viability in terms of the larger ADF and allied forces is dependent on its datalink to a great extent (which is limited). Generalised I know.
The expense incurred to upgrade the F-111's to the standard where they'd have modern datalink, glass cockpit and so on would have been huge and we'd be the only ones forking out for it. After all that, the airframe itself would need some serious attention and unfortunately there's nobody else in need of zero-timed F-111 parts, so we'd be shouldering that substantial cost as well.
Great jet for its time, but that time is over. Wouldn't have kept the Mirage III just because its faster than the Hornet right?
