Another great picture from the days when the UK was a world power...

Your description of a Gannet heading off the Portuguese PV-2 was interesting - presumably nothing else could fly slow enough to give that Harpoon a surprise?

Hi John, great to hear from you. I recall our nights out in York, well, the first hour or so!

Nice photo of '014'. Good to see one of a Vixen the old man would have pointed around the sky in the good old days.

A "Scimilar" picture to David's. From 803 Sqn; "We also spent much of this time reducing the stowage problem by disposing of aircraft into the catwalk, into the barrier and into the sea. This was achieved by Messrs. Skrodski,Notley, Williams and de Souza."

That coal hole is the luxury version with a reasonable view! As a (very!) lucky CCF cadet, I had a passenger ride in a 'Vixen underneath a very solid Looker's hatch - the only view out was through that small side window. But what an experience!!

Very good photographs indeed on Mr Eacott's site. Good suggestion Mr P.

Am I right in saying that although the a/c Registration Number remains constant, if the machine moves between squadron/unit the Nose ID can change?

tarantonight.

You are correct, but it does not have to be a move to have it changed. On Ark Royal the Vixens were numbered in the "200's" and the Scimitars in the "100's". They were then changed with the Vixens starting "001", (including "007"), and the Scimitars "02ish". I can give you some "old " numbers from Feb'65 of Vixens if you want to check the log book.
XN688 = 240
XN707 = 242
XJ521 = 243
XN709 = 246

Call Sign Numbers, on Buccaneers at Lossiemouth. Was a very sore point. After Loosing 634 and 229...... the dreaded Triskaidekaphobia

Thank you for the numbers - have checked the log book and almost a full house! Only XN709 missing, but there some gaps re registration numbers, so who knows.

XJ521 has the most entries. Good to have the log book open and look at the photograph of '014' by the way.
