what's the music?
Starting about half way through the clip, it's Vangelis:- 1492 - Conquest of Paradise (from the movie with the same name).

If they are Victorious Scimitars.... then wouldn't that mean 803NAS as the only Scimitar NAS to operate off Victorious and therefore date it to around 1960-62 ish before 803 transferred to Hermes.........???

Last Scimitar front line squadron (803) disbanded in 1966 from Ark, so film has to be early sixties....???

A Flt Cdr on my first Sqn had done a tour with the Navy flying Scimitars and he swears the following story is true:-

A Scimitar was being launched on a particularly rough day. Just as the a/c went off the sharpe end the bows dipped and a noticably large wave was coming the other way. To the watchers it looked as if the a/c had simply ploughed into the sea. However, it emerged from the contretemps, still flying and managed to stagger away---all that was heard on the radio was "Thank You God"

One and All, slight drift here, but have a read of From Tailhooker to Mudmover by Dick Lord, a former FAA fast jet man from the Golden Era. A cracking read.

Also Fly Navy - The View From The Cockpit, edited by Charles Manning - some of the yarns will make your toes curl if the nearest you've got to a Force 8 is The Discovery Channel.

I remember Stumpy F having a photo of the leading edge of his Scimitar wing cut through as far as the main spar after a cable strike in a fjord in Norway - anyone got a copy of it?

The film was shot during Hermes first commission (1960-61), the second carrier visible is undoubtedly Ark Royal, the '965 single bedstead and 'interim' 5 degree angled deck clinch it. Eagle was at this time deep in refit (1959-1964) and was the only carrier to have both 984 and 965 'double bedstead'.

So, in the early sixties, to help with recognition the RN had:
HMS Ark Royal R09 deck code R, single 965 5 degree deck two cats forward (until 1967);
HMS Eagle R05 deck code E, 984 'dustbin', double 965 8 degree deck two cats one forward to port and one in waist, (all post refit 1964)
HMS Victorious R38 deck code V, 984 'dustbin' 8 degree deck two cats forward;
HMS Hermes R12 deck code H, 984 'dustbin' deck edge lift to port, 6 degree deck (increased to 8 degrees post 66) two cats forward;
HMS Centaur R06 deck code C, single 965 on foremast (post 63) 5 degree deck two cats forward;
HMS Albion R07 Commando Carrier, helicopter spots only on deck, single 965 on mainmast, aircraft have letter A but not painted on deck
HMS Bulwark R08 Commando Carrier, helicoter spots only on deck, no 965, 'hayrake' type 982 above bridge, aircraft have letter B but not painted on deck (until 1979)

Hope that helps

Got both.... i think???? 07/03/1962XD319192Scimitar F1807 NASDitched 200 yards ahead of HMS Centaur in the Gulf of Aden after missing the on landing wires and attempting to go round again. The pilot was rescued by the SAR helicopter and 20/09/1965XD223R-031Scimitar F1803 NASTook off from HMS Ark Royal for an engine flight test. The port engine failed to relight after being shut down and the pilot diverted to Changi, Singapore. He ejected while on approach after suffering port generator and hydraulic failure 300 yards off the runway which caused the controls to lock. Allocated to the fire dump at Changi
