Tornado Giant Bell End......... ZE728 pilot wanted

Or rather Tornado ZE728 is to be scrapped, melted down and end it's life cast as a giant bell......... Go figure!

JournalLive - News - Today's News - Former RAF fighter plane to be turned into a giant bell

News

Finally a Tornado that may look and sound sweet.

According to Great North Run Culture, the Tornado artwork will be “a metaphor for the possibilities and understanding of change.” Jon Bewley said there would be a lot of educational projects attached to the making and unveiling of the bell.
We would like to find the pilots who flew the plane and to offer the last pilot to fly it the first strike of the bell,” he said.

A Bell made out of aluminium, even with some titanium mixed (if there is any in an F3) is going to sound bl**dy awful. The first strike on it needs to be by a GR4 to trash it IMO!

TJ - reply sent.

I have to also say that I'm unsure whether the bell will sound good - my bicycle bell is made from aluminium!!!

Leon,

Are you sure your bike bell is alloy ?!

As for the Tornado, if one's going to recast it as anything in the name of art & tokens etc, wouldn't a 'ploughshare' be better ?

Yup it's alloy and it gives out a pathetic "ping"

Here's the one I bought Halfords Black Alloy Bike Bell from Halfords Price £2.00

There's about 400kg of titanium in the wingbox.

I would be amazed if any of the titanium got to the scrapyard, probably worth more than the rest of the jet put together!

Asraam, you're right.

I seem to remember that the the wingbox was the only thing of any value in the GR1Bs and Batch 1 GR1s that got scrapped in 2002-ish. ISTR £80k a throw at scrap prices.
