I'm with you mate.

It just shows what a depraved, decrepit and low-life society we have to live in.

I live in a small village and last year some scumbag stole the york stone paving flags from around our war memorial. It just beggars belief how low some people can stoop - particularly whilst our lads and lasses are risking their lives in the Stan.

Sadly not the first time this has happened...

Plymouth Naval Memorial

The memorial at RAF Down Ampney - or what remained of it when I went there in 2004

One the more audacious thefts took place a couple of years ago in the village of Chedzoy, Somerset. The bronze staute on this grave was stolen, the theives used a hiab type truck and a couple of locals asked why they were taking the statue away and were told that it was for repairs.

I don't understand why.
Sadly, the reason for the theft in 99% of cases is for the scrap metal value of the plaque.

However, not always so. in Australia at the moment, there's major discussion in the media after the memorial at an inner city suburban RSL (Arncliffe, Sydney) (RSL = British legion) was vandalised and the flag pole broken the night before Anzac Day, apparently not for the first time. Up to 20 teenagers "of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern appearance" were seen wrecking the site, their aim, apparently, as in the past, to spoil the remembrance ceremonies the next day.

This, apparently, is an ongoing battle (4 years at least) in that particular suburb between traditional Australia and the new, multicultural Australia, where Australian-born people of a particular faith see the armed forces of their country as enemies who are killing people with similar religious beliefs (with whom they identify far more than with their own countrymen not of their faith) in places like Iraq and Afghanistan.

Some might ask where young teenagers (and so many of them) would have learned such things.

Three months training with the Royal Marines or Paras should be the mandatory punishment for any detained for such a crime.

...at least!
I'm thinking a full year in such an environment would be a very good diciplinary upbringing for ALL the youth of today...including the girls!

Cheers

The 'moor

A twelve month stretch in the wonderful surroundings of HMP Dartmoor should do the trick.

Personally, I feel there's a correlation between this and the 'wearing uniform' thread, which appears to be the ability of the UK to breed more wankers per capita than many other countries, combined with a very unhealthy lack of respect for self or others. Come the World Cup many of the same thieving lager-swillers will be waving the flag and claiming to be patriotic, while undoubtedly believing Hitler to be the 1966 German soccer team manager...and way too many people do think this.
