RAF Chipmunks

RAF Gatow. The grey ones supported BRIXMIS over East Germany back then.
And don't forget the pre-landing... MFFHHB (My Friend Fred Has Hairy Balls)... TAFIO ...Ooops, sorry, wrong aeroplane.
Coff:
Actually one of the spotter's reports was that WZ870 was observed towing a glider that day. In Sept 1958 the strakes were in the process of being applied - I guess maybe Training Command Chipmunks had a priority.
Cheers.
I note she is minus Spinning Strakes and is a Glider Tower ...
Cheers.
Less hair:
Actually all three were with Gatow Station Flight.
WG486 (nearest) is now with the BBMF, WG466 (furthest) is with the Luftwaffe Museum at Gatow while WG478 (leading) is mine here in Australia.
The occasion was the flypast for the Queen's Birthday Parade in 1994.

Dora-9 ...
I've just had a closer look on my larger iMac screen ... It looks to me that outboard of the main starboard undercarriage leg there is a similar colour 'Band' that wraps the wing fore and aft in a similar way to the original Yellow Band we are all more familiar with ?
Best ...

Like father, like son...
At least they didn't subject him to the "beacon of shame" that his father had to endure. Not only did he have to fly it with the big beacon blaring, but they also painted his kite bright red!
The aircraft is still flying today based out of RAF Henlow

Breech in, engine primed, cowling secure and rear switches on, Sir. 27 Aug 79 was the last time I said that for real, I will never forget it. 6 AEF were a happy bunch, who found that a keg of beer lay beautifully across the rear canopy rails, après lufting.

Hey Smuj, this was taken not far from your neck of the woods yesterday. PM me and if you offer to help pump up the tyres and top it up with oil, I'll take you up and show you what a mess they're making of Lyneham Field
Chickenlover,
PM Inbound, I'm ironing my old growbag as I type, in anticipation, are you really that desperate for ballast Coff, was WK577 ever a 6 AEF aircraft ? It is more reminiscent of my ATC air experience flights circa 67, than the red and white of 6AEF 1977.

Smudge ...
I'm not aware if WK577 (C1-0598) served with 6 AEF ... But I believe she may have been based this way, possibly at Lydd, some years ago when the Registered Owner was a C. R. R. Eagleton.
Dora-9 might be of more help with the service history
In addition to Chickenlover's 'requirements' ... photos would be greatly appreciated ... Enjoy !!!

Chickenlover,
I am on my way to kidnap smudge and take his place !
First Chippie flight was in WK 628 with DUAS at RAF Usworth on 23 Sep 1956, a low level with aerobatics according to my RAF F 3822. I can still remember it.

We have a potted history in the '700'- It served the UASs in London, Leeds, Edinburgh and Oxford, and the AEFs at Manston, Cambridge, West Malling and White Waltham. No numbers and exact dates sadly. Be a delight to whisk you aloft smuj - must warn you though, I'm relatively new to this delightful aeroplane - bring your gum shield

Just checked my notes for 1 AEF ... It would appear WK577 was a 'Founder' aircraft joining 1 AEF at RAF Biggin Hill in 1958 when the AEF scheme started. She went on to serve with 1 AEF until 1968 based later at RAF White Waltham (59), RAF West Malling (60), back to RAF White Waltham (61) and finally RAF Manston (63)
Here is an article first published in Flight (1958) covering the formation of the AEF's ... Featuring 1 AEF. WK577 can be seen in the lower picture (2nd aircraft on the Flightline)
Best ...
