Angry Non conventional tail rotors - cobra

Dunno if any one can help, but a few years ago I saw a design of tail rotor for a cobra which was somewhat unusual and which I can't find any info on. It looked basically like a pusher prop in a shroud and allowed the heli to hover 30 degrees nose up (or down?). All my searches have so far turned up fruitless, any nice Marines out there know anything?

Piasecki Vectored Thrust Ducted Propeller (VTDP) installed on a Cobra. Piasecki is always installing this device on something at Government expense, including most recently a contract to create the VTDP Blackhawk for the US Airforce!. . Compound Cobra.

You're probably thinking of the Piasecki Vectored Thrust Ducted Propeller (VTDP). For details of the AH-1 proposal, try http://avia.russian.ee/vertigo/piasecki_cobra-r.html. .. .A couple of years ago, Piasecki also won a $26m USN contract to flight test an SH-60F with the same ring tail design in 2003 (see http://www.nawcad.navy.mil/rotarywing/images/vtdp.jpg).. .. .For a full program update from Nick, Lu & co, you may want to try asking the question over on the Rotorheads forum.. .. .Cheers,. .T/shaft

There was also an American helo in the late 60's early 70's with a prop at the back (named after an indian tribe but cannot remember) saw a documentary about it on the Wings channel awhile back. It looked quite impressive but was then scrapped.. .. .Rgds. .VEEPS

Ones here at Alabama its called the Cheyenne and did about 240 kts, the rotor was just to get it airbourne, it had wings and used the prop at the rear to achieve forward airspeed. . .. .The problem was that the USAF wouldn`t let us have a CAS aircraft !. .. .The metalurgy wasn`t really up to it either it was a 1960/70 project.. .. .Shame really would have been fun, . .. .Oh and ejector seats to !
