1. Don't drop the soap in the showers.. .. .2. If asked to inspect a golden rivet, don't!. .. .3. When invited to join the stokers' daisy chain, decline.. .. .4. Learn Jackspeak so that you can mystify the rest of the 21st century's military forces with quaint Nelsonian gibberish.. .. .5. Don't ask 'Crabs' serious questions...... .. .Enjoy yourself!!

It's 20 years, frighteningly enough, since I was there, but I don't suppose things have changed too much. From the mists of time, the advice I can think of is:. .. .1) Try and get as physically fit as you can before you start - there's a lot of physical activity and it helps to be up to speed from the start.. .. .2) When you get there, buy extra uniform and PE kit to wear, so you can leave the stuff you get issued with in pristine condition, on display in your cabin.. .. .3) Practice using words like cabin when you mean room, heads when you mean latrine, and so on.. .. .4) There will be times, like parade training and many lectures, when you only need to be present physically, not mentally. Cultivate the art of relaxing your mind completely while your face adopts an expression of keen and alert interest - this is a skill which will in any case come in very handy throughout life.. .. .5) Work genuinely with the other cadets - a problem shared is a problem halfed and so on.. .. .6) Be positive, enjoy it as much as you can. Seize every opportunity to sleep or drink alcohol.. .. .7) Don't listen to BEagle - he speaks Latin!!. .. .Good Luck,. .. .TicketyBoo.

I was there 82-3.

Kiwi, I expect the schools in NZ still teach proper maths, instead of just how to fiddle with a calculator. My niece, who used to try to teach maths to the cadets at BRNC, used to run special remedial courses for those who aspired to become aviators. It might be worth your while doing some mental arithmetic (speed/distance/time/fuel consumption, aiming for quick and dirty answers, rather than precision. Be ambitious. Do not settle for the Commandant's nanny, if his wife is prettier. But DO NOT GET CAUGHT!

On day one wear high heels, wait for someone to shout 'hurry up you lot', then trip over.. .Sue MOD for £200k AND get a commission without doing any officer training!. .. .Seriously Kiwi, Only get noticed for the right reasons, life can be tough at BRNC so don't go making it any harder for yourself.. .Get fit and get organized. If you end up in Hawke Division you are guaranteed to be both by the end of your time there (It is a long way from sandquay and back if you forget your River Card!!!!!). .Watch for the golddiggers that lurk in the pubs in the village especially if there are any special events going on at the college.. .. .Oh and try to come to terms with the 5 minute rule. ie be at your next lesson 5 mins before it starts, this is usually 10 mins before the previous one ends and adds to the pressure just to keep you on your toes .

Don't go there in the first place - then dig yourself a tunnel out of the Navy (yeah yeah I know it's ROYAL navy) - or just get used to being cooped up in gutless museum pieces.
Discuss!!!!!!!!
pause 2 secs.......then reel in - Mum it's not fair, crabs keep picking on me
