Actually, you might be surprised how quickly things progress!
If you haven't already, check out the link at: http://www.defencejobs.defence.com.au/ and click on the "Additional Information" on the top right hand corner of the screen. There is a link called "Aptitude testing" or something like that and one called "ADF selection processes" (I think). Might prove helpful, as there are some practice questions.
Might also be worthwhile having a look at a few of the IQ questions in this forum (a few threads back)
Also, why Army? RMC, nasty trench digging, rat paks, etc. What about RAAF? Knives, forks, tea and biscuits darling... Plus you get to fly s$%t loads quicker!
And the new uniform makes you look less of a bus driver than the old one.

Mr Chique,
Why bother with the nasty smelly pongos, when you can fly helos from one of HMs finest grey war canoes? just think, you can take your bar and bed wherever you go round the world.....

Seriously, all banter aside, I can give you some pointers ref the helo training system. (before they change it all again that is) Prune mail me and I'll try to help with any questions- ([email protected])

Are you in Aus at present? if so where?

I think you may find northern_chique is actually a chique, as opposed to a bloque, oldpinger!

Good luck with it, northern_chique.
It's a good while since I joined, but the basic concept is:

1. A day of initial screening - psych testing (heaps of questions, just answer honestly and you'll be right), medical, interview with recruiting officers (have a good read up on the basic structure of what you're hoping to join - i.e. what aircraft, where, what their role is, etc.
Some basic knowledge of the service shows you are keen; but basically just be yourself.)

Aptitude testing - written / picture questions, e.g. aircraft in a certain attitude, what should the instruments be reading (multi-choice), spatial orientation kind of stuff.

Plus I think they still use an old stick and rudder device where you keep a light in a circle on a screen in front of you - measures how well you learn hand-eye coordination type tasks, and not really something you can prepare for - just jump on and do it.

2. Depending how you went on the first day, you'll come back for a board interview - 3 people vs. you; they have a board president (a senior-ish officer), a specialist officer (aircrew in this case of course) and a psych taking notes and hitting you with questions out of left field. Again, do some reading and research, but just be positive and be yourself.

3. Wait for an offer!

You don't have to be an expert on military matters but as I say, do some research and also some soul-searching so you are confident with your reasons for wanting to join, and with what you want to do and why.

Apologies if you're already aware of this kind of stuff, best of luck.

Angel

Thanks heaps guys, I did a visit to 161 recce today to find out a bit more. The guys there were very helpful with my very dumb questions.

Had a quick look at the Jetranger (sorry Kiowa) and how its kitted out. Everything works! bets the hell out of GA any day.
The Aussie Tigers look to be alot of fun after watching one in action at Bankstown so some of the guys looking forward to some new machines I guess. Head Up display well, having never used one they tell me it could be a bit of a pain looking up.

The system once in sounds good, and have a friend in 5/7 based at Robertson Barracks who has also been a huge help (he did too many cushy years at Oakey RAP). SSO sounds to be the way to go. I just have to get in first.

Definitely Miss Chique...... albeit a tomboy chique most days...

Hey the first intellegence test is to get the link to work....... mmmm now let me see.

Thanks again guys

damn I will have to learn to spell first!

Thumbs up

Northern chique,

I'm on the verge of leaving the services now after a long time in; was an SSO for a while and it's a good way to go, if you're more in it for the flying rather than to progress up the ranks.

There are many frustrations along the way, and lots of people bad-mouth the sometimes hard-to-understand decisions that seem to be made at higher levels. Like any government outfit, we have some bureaucratic systems that cause some grief.

However, when I look at all the opportunities for training, travel, and experiences I would never have had elsewhere, I feel it was all well worth it.

Did you also talk to 173 (the Twotter guys)while you were visiting 161? They could give you another perspective on Army flying life.

OK then, best of luck.

Northern_Chique,

Your test day 1 will be held in darwin which will just be your general aptitude test- sorting number/picture sequences, mechanical/physics type questions and 2 maths papers including trigonometry. Providing you get throught that you will do a medical.

Test day 2 will be in Adelaide (they will fly you there) where you do more maths papers, spacial apperception, an essay and hand eye co-ordination test. You get through these and you will see a psych and recruiting officer. You will then go to 2 weeks flight screening in Tamworth and a selection board.

My advice is grab a heap of IQ and apptitude books (any book store) and practice. Look over your year 11 and 12 maths and physics, play stacks of Sony playstation 2 and she'll be apples. You can also order a "military flight aptitude testing" book over Amazon-great investment. They only give you 2 weeks notice before each test so be prepared.

Lock it in eddie

Mate I am in the same boat as Northern chique. My testing is at the end of September and I have been looking for that aptitude book for a while. I found one as suggested but it will take 4-6 weeks to get here (canberra). Would you be prepared to make your copy available to me (I will pay postage etc). Could you email me at [email protected] so we can discuss.
Thanks a lot. Cheers
