Post RAF Newton - Site for "Asylum Seekers"

Just thought those who used to be based at Newton would like to know that the local press is now reporting that the government is considering using the site to house asylum seekers!

I think the locals are even more irate about this than they were when proposals were put forward to build houses on the site. Those who have already bought the old quarters adjacent to the camp are not at all pleased - bring back the a/c, all is forgiven!

Is Ty Croes still available? See how keen they are to seek asylum if it means living on Ynys Mon!

Ah Newton! Happy days - right next to Nottingham with its half dozen females to every male, and a night life that lasted until dawn. I've no idea how I passed my course, in fact I can remember little of it as I was asleep most of the time. What a shame to waste it on asylum seekers.

And to the Geordie WRAF that welcomed the New Year in behind the bomb shelter with me, back in '68, I still remember you. Its just your name I've forgotten...

Had some happy times at Newton in my UAS days. Funny how the place has gone full circle, it was opened in WW2 for the Polish Air Force - in a time when we were a bit more welcoming to asylum seekers!

My deepest sympathies to the gentry of East Bridgeford, whose constant complaints about the Bulldogs practicing glide circuits, I had to field. My abiding memory of the place is the smell that came from the dog crematorium.

what a waste of a lovely little airfield.

Mr Angry from Bingham will have a whole new reason to come racing through the crash gate in his 4x4 now

I promise I never used to time the response check/engine warm whilst as close to his house as possible on a PFL

RAF Newton sounds like a pleasant spot from some of the posts above. You blokes obviously do things differently to us. We put our asylum seekers in places where the rest of us don't want to live.. .Incidently, I thought it was just we evil Aussies that put people in detention centres. Our media would have us believe that we are pariahs of the international community for our government's policy.

Absolutely criminal to treat the finest training airfield ( before JEFTS arrived ) in the UK like this - just to raise a small ammount of cash. Not forgetting the close proximity to Nottingham and the surrounding universities that EMUAS serves. Happy Days.

...according to yesterday's news, you can add RAF Hemswell(Gainsborough) and MOD land near Bicester to the list!

News - Nothing changes at Hemswell, it was used for Ugandan Asians in 73/4. At least it'll improve the poor old place now if Asylum Seekers use it.

Remember Hemswells asians very well having had to dodge round several who cut across my nose on approach. Being engineless of course couldn't exactly open up and go round.

A case of it serves them right. If I remember rightly Newton was a wartime base... so it did'nt just appear after these people bought their houses.

Let this be a lesson for all the other antis near airfields in this country... still it will make hangmans corner at East Bingham a little more lively.

top bit of news bob!

I don't think that the standard of most military accommodation is high enough to house asylum seekers. Shurely it would need upgrading before use as a detention centre?
