From the BBC News website today:

"British lead elements will be on the ground by the end of the week.

Defence officials say these will be Royal Marines from 40 Commando, based in Taunton.

They are part of a task force that has been stationed in the Indian Ocean for several weeks.

Team report

But it may be some time before any other troops, British, European or anyone else, fly out to join them."

Full report.

Let's hope it's Xmas at home for most. Season's Greetings from across the pond.

Red face

Mmmm...stating the bleedin' obvious but a quick one-off we may handle, however this ones going to run and run. If we're OIC this then we can't withdraw when we want. Manning and recruitment must have improved in the last.....oh maybe not.

Met an ex-colleague last week who had been dragged back from his home in France. Said he'd been mobilised - RAF AUX - and was expecting to be sent to Afg. before Christmas. Was kicking his heels for a few days before being shipped out from Brize.

So are the ground troops going to be mostly TA then ????

Angry

Expect an announcement on Sat 22nd or during the following couple of days, after the interim Afghani Govt has 'stood up'.

Any gaps in regular forces WILL be filled by TA manpower by first of all trawling the relevant units for volunteers before consideration is given to Compulsory Call Up notices.

Looks like its another, " it's only going to be 3 months" type of thing to me. Question, why are we there anyway? Anyone with an ounce of knowledge will know they will start fighting against each other in the near future.
