Madbob,

The C17 procurement was based on accepting the aircraft "as issued", in a sense, to the USAF.

As lease aircraft, tinkering with them was not an option.

Interesting example the C17. A few months ago, one touched down short of the runway operating into Kandahar. The Crews have no UK simulator to train in, they operate hot and high into runways that regularly have challenging crosswinds. This incident could easily have resulted in a crash. We are effectively throwing crews into theatre, having to learn the job on live ops.

When is the MoD going to provide a simulator to replicate profiles carried out on challenging missions in Afg? Or do we have to lose a frame first?

Speaking with 35 years of flying behind me - mostly military but ten years civil too, and as an ex Flight Safety officer, NEVER has my faith in our lords and masters been at so low an ebb.

I used to think it was just politicians (you KNOW they're lying, because their lips are moving), but I used to have more faith in our uniformed leaders as I believed they had our best interests at heart.

At age, nearly 60, I find again that I have been naive and have to accept the unpalatable fact that they too are self-seeking and in the politicians' mould. Let's defer all decisions and avoid taking any responsibility until 'we' can go to our next job en route to our knighthood and big pension.

'They're not all like that' I hear shouted . . . well listen - the silence of the 'good ones' is deafening.

I mean, where DO we go from here, who, in authority has actually got ANY credibility left?

These FACTS are bad enough, we've not even scratched the surface of the knock-on effect for the future. Frankly it is SO depressing.

The Boeing C-17, however, is likely to have a Boeing Maintenance Review Board (MRB) and Maintenance Procedure Document (MPD) dictating the minimum maintenance that has to be done - and possibly already has an Ageing Aircraft assessment too.

Dengue Dude

Well said indeed.

"For evil to flourish, all it takes is for good men (and women) to do nothing."

Let's see some action - flag up your safety concerns and don't stop til you get an answer. This also applies if you are P1 of a 'mahogany bommber'!

DD - echo those sentiments entirely.

Flipster - unfortunately those same self-serving individuals also control the FS chain - condors don't make it into print, risks are 'managed' (not by those in the cockpit though) and the burden of proof of a FS or airworthiness problem falls to the guys on the front line who are already working too hard.
