Moose - IIRC 30 days under ISAF command, which is why I qualified for my OSM and ISAF separately on the same tour. Went out to Helmand when it was a Brit operation, then about a month or so in we flipped across to being under ISAF command. All of a sudden, ops seemed to go out of the window for a few days as all the heads of sheds were concerned about was why we weren't wearing ISAF badges, and all the troops were concerned about was getting the NATO medal instead of the OSM.

Cheers, I might look into that then.

If I'm entitled, I may as well get it, another thing to leave the kids on my demise

Blacksheep, HM subsequently gave permission for the Russian Arctic Convoy medal to be worn after British medals - and in the last couple of years an emblem to be worn on the Atlantic Star ribbon has been awarded to convoy veterans.
Too late, too late...
Like so many of his shipmates, he's crossed the bar. The medals can only hang on my wall now.

Can somebody explain why you would want to wear medals on a DJ, whether on board a cruise ship or not.

Finding it a bit hard to leave it all behind are we?

I've worn mine twice since I left; on both occassions when attending a formal occassion arranged by the Royal British Legion.

Why not ask HRH The Duke of Edinburgh? - I've frequently seen him doing so!!

APPROVAL FOR THE ACCEPTANCE AND WEAR OF THE NATO MEDAL FOR THE NON-ARTICLE 5 ISAF OPERATION IN AFGHANISTAN
8 July 2005

Her Majesty The Queen has recently given Her approval for the unrestricted acceptance and wear of the following foreign medal:

The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) Medal for the Non-Article 5 ISAF Operation in Afghanistan for 30 days or more service with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) since 11 August 2003.

Those personnel who are eligible, and who have been awarded the NATO Medal for the Non-Article 5 ISAF Operation in Afghanistan, may now wear the medal.

"Two points from earlier posts. First - Blacksheep, HM subsequently gave permission for the Russian Arctic Convoy medal to be worn after British medals - and in the last couple of years an emblem to be worn on the Atlantic Star ribbon has been awarded to convoy veterans."

The emblem was issued to convoy veterans to be worn on the lapel of a jacket. Veterans have made the decision to wear it on the medal.

As for the ISAF medal (for what it's worth) that was handed to me by an SAC, in a cracked box and a cheery comment that I could pick my commemorative certificate up next time I was heading out to AFG as long as I could get to KAF!!!
I received a GSM, South Arabia (Aden) the same way but it was hardly the fault of the SAC. More likely his w**ker of a boss who couldn't be arsed.

RogerK,

Do you have the DIN ref for that???

As I thought it only applied to the NZDF.

Not so long ago I was invited to the retirement dining out of my first F4 Navigator; stipulated dress was Black Tie & miniatures. I opted for little medals rather than little bottles.

Double Medal(ling)

It may well be that the NATO ISAF gong is approved for wear - as RogerK can demonstrate. However, if you have received a UK national medal for the same campaign you cannot wear both - this is double medalling. One should wear the OSM Afghanistan and not the NATO ISAF. Quite how you get an NATO ISAF medal while not getting an OSM is beyond me, but I'm sure someone has achieved it.
The MOD Medal Office booklet at Medals_Booklet does not even show the NATO ISAF medal but does include the NATO Kosovo award since there was no equivalent UK medal.
I understand that one's minature rack should exactly reflect the full size version. Otherwise you are at the mercy of a sharp eyed, anally retentive Mess President. Inflate your deployed service as you wish, but be prepared to pay in port wine.
As with LJ, my ISAF medal was reawarded to my son for looking after home plate. He's put it in the same place that I would have - the back of his sock drawer!

Medal collectors

I was always glad to return from unfriendly places. If HMQ wanted to give me a medal to show off on parades and mess dos that was her privilege.

I prefer to remember the old adage 'Glory goes not to those with medals but, to those who didn't come back for them.'

Folks, just be happy you are still running around. You can always yarn over places without a shiny gong to back up the story. I'm going to make some room in my sock drawer, now if I can get the kids to take those metal bits away. (Thanks for the hint, Swampy).
