The Deid - Morale Improvements
You couldn't make it up.To improve morale and combat graffiti at a top secret coalition base in Qatar, they've decided to remove all the domestic area (men's) toilet cubicle doors. If this doesn't improve morale enough, they're planning to take down the cubicle walls too.... If you're coming, get here quickly or risk missing out. :-)

Several of the "Chuck Norris" stalls are still available for our entertainment but all the Cadillacs have been "morale improved", for our sanitary convenience. The legendary "Chuck" stalls in the VIP Departure Area are still there - for now...

Bog wall graffiti can often be combated by the simple expedient of installing a whiteboard and dry marker on the stall door. Which stops idiots carving rubbish such as "675476th Recon kick butt - hoo-rah" or other such nonsense.
Whilst contemplating my knees once at Gatwick in the 1970s, I spotted a very cutlured piece of bog wall graffiti:
"Should Excalibur's reincarnation prove imminent, may it please take place in another stretch of water......"

I always thought the Brit/UK graffiti was a little close to threatening the 'Coalition of the Willing', but find it hard to believe the solution is public defacation drills. Has nobody heard of black paint?

Someone had heard of black paint once but then someone else heard of Tippex / Whiteout / Silver Marker pens (depending on which side of the ocean you are from..) and back to square one we went (minus the cost of all that black paint)
To which the reply would be "What idiot spent all this money on black paint ?"
Boredom on det leads to inventive minds IMO.....

My goodness, life is hard at Al Udeid isn't it? Try a tour at Basra or Bastion, where you don't have a swimming pool, or ice creams, or a PX/BX, or an unlimited shower, or a duvet, or whatever else. And you have to have the odd bit of incoming.
F*ck me, some people don't know when they're blessed. It can ALWAYS be worse guys.

I'll take austere over stupid any day.
One thing the USAF excels at is stupid. A trip to the Deid should be R&R, but the base 'leadership' finds ways to make you want to go back to your tent in the dust.
My theory is that the average USAF support colonel on deployment has about as much deployed experience as the average lieutenant. They grew up in the cold war in such forward locations as RAF Bentwaters and Bittberg AB. They get plucked from their colonel job at Nowhere AFB, USA to take their (one) turn in the dessert 'leading the troops' before they retire. Now they're out of their league, playing in the sandbox.
The aircrew colonels at the Deid are trying to launch sorties. In their spare time they bitch about the support colonels and scrawl their witty observations on the latrine walls.

Champagne anyone...?
Try a tour at Basra or Bastion
Passed thru the deed recently and it's dire; as the man with the green feet said, the place is inhabited (like KAF too) by mongs doing the one OOA tour of their lives and making their mark by creating more triv and nause for those of us that actually have a job to do.

It''s all over...... for now!
Good news from near the front, toilet doors have now been replaced.
Apparently, it's claimed they were taken away for "repainting", about 100 or so, all the Caddies at one time. Clearly common sense has prevailed but "morale improvement" must wait for another day......
Sorry if this post has upset those of us who're having (or have had) it harder - yep, it can always be worse but surely there's no need to make life more difficult for stupid reasons.

Americans need more allies that will give credit where none is due. I hardly think common sense prevailed. They probably got a new colonel (on his first trip overseas) who found a way to make immediate improvement and gain lasting fame by adding toilet doors.
The good news is that our current crop of lieutenants and captains have spent their entire careers on rotations to those places. Expect things to get fixed in about 15 years.
The bad news is that I've met hundreds of colonels who have never been overseas--not even to Alaska. They all supposedly have to go once before anyone is due to go again. The crop of untrained support colonels is far from depleted.
P.S. Don't tell the Canadians that Alaska is overseas from the contiguous 48 states, they might get mad enough to deface the toilet doors at the Deid.
