This is what NOMS thought of the site; it was dated February 2008!

At least the prisoners will have blocks that are of a decent standard.

Reminds me when in 1977 the security fence around RAF Benson was being replaced with new chain-link stuff.

Sat in the bar at the Shepherds Hut in Ewelme (as you do), I let slip that it was to do with the fact that Benson had been selected for the site of the new South Oxfordshire Open Prison (much debate in the Oxford Mail at the time).

Fan, ****, hit.

Taxydual had to maintain a very low profile for a while.

Should start a rumour like that at Shawbury, that'll stop locals complaining !

Post Pic on newspaper site

A nice pic of the old blocks being converted, plus a couple of the smaller ones knocked down, I think. Worth a look

It's been said before but I'll say it again. The accomodation for the nation's finest is deemed to be of insufficient quality for the use of prisoners. It says a huge amount about the respect that successive governments have had for the armed forces and their priorities.

Also, a great shame to see another good airfield destroyed. The day may come in the future when we wish we had a few more airfields but it's a lot easier to close them than to open them.

WTF?

Can't really cap what Torque Tonight said; unfit for prisoners, no en-suite facilities!

As for the spelling in that document, enough said.

In the good old days at RAF Odius when some of the blocks were divided up with lockers to make 2 bed areas someone wrote to farmers weekly asking how many Pigs could be accomodated in a room x feet by y feet in size, well illuminated and heated, they published it and came back with something like 10 to 12 adult Pigs..... There was over 20 of us living in that space

Suprised their not teaching them useful trades like being Locksmiths

After 2 years of the wooden huts of Yatesbury and Cosford, I remember the brick built H-Blocks of Lindholme as nice warm luxurious accommodation.

Yet another camp that was 'up-graded' to a H.M. Prison.

I agree whole heartedly with Torque Tonight, when we proudly marched out the gate 2 1/2 year ago heads held high, community in support and so much hope for the future of the sight- wasted potential!

Now - so much promise for the site and community has gone I never thought it would end up like this - tragic! My heart goes out to the community which supported us all, in particular in the last few months, all the hope has gone - so much for the rumoured Rugby Academy based in the Sgts Mess useng the pitches and gym and the other plans- I guess the eco town is well and truly dead!
Iaf nothing else I thought the famous newts would have saved the accomodation site from this degradation!

As an ex SNCO ic a barrack block at Colt (can't remember its name but it was Colt and Neat combined circa 83) I can only wish HMPS the best of luck. I had a cpl ic who was a black belt at virtually every martial art in the book and he (I) had very little trouble with disciplinary issues. Can;t imagine that the same ruls apply today. Good times
