RAF SAR Trg

Can someone give a quick break down of RAF SAR Trg, ie length of time, locations, upper age limit etc. Also with it potentially going civie, how long before you've missed the boat

Cheers

Not the worlds best way to start a thread.

May I suggest you re-read your post and then think about re-submitting it in light of the following questions...

Are you already in the RAF?
Have you completed OASC?
Are you already qualified Aircrew?
Are you wanting to become front or rear crew?

as the answers to these will significantly alter the answer that anyone in the know and trying to be helpful will give.

In the meantime expect a whole load of banter and If you're unlucky you may also get a visit from crab@ - in which case stand by for the thread to be hijacked and a whole load of pain...then again I have heard he is still counting penguins at the moment.

Regards

SW

counting penguins
It would seem that penguin-bothering hasn't entirely prevented him brightening up Pprune in the last month or so...

Couple of quick answers:

All RAF SAR trg, including rearcrew medical trg, is now done at Valley.

I would suspect that most of those who will serve in the RAF SAR Force are already in the RAF (even if only in basic trg) - given the length of time spent getting someone to an operational unit, you'd need to be starting IOT/ITC very shortly to get to the front line in time for the projected drawdown of 2013ish. And no, it doesn't take 5 years to get through trg, but presumably the trg system will itself draw down for the last year or two while the new order takes over, so I'd suggest that if you're not at a Flight by 2011, you'll miss the boat.

But all of this is educated guessing, please don't hang me if I'm wrong...

Day1-Week1,

I'm assuming from the content of your post that you are not currently serving.

You cannot apply to join the RAF as SAR aircrew. As a pilot you can be streamed rotary and after training at Shawbury you MAY be selected for SAR.

Nearly all rearcrew come from either a Support Helicopter (SH) or fixed wing (mainly Nimrod) background with 5 or more years experience. Occasionally WSOp students are selected to go straight to SAR but this really is exceptional.

As Spanish Waltzer has already said, let us know your background and we will be able give you more information.

If you are planning to join the RAF and go straight into SAR then forget it unless your name is William and your granny is called Liz and has a large house in London.
