Wessex HC2 - Wanted...!

Does any one know of a Wessex HC2 in need of a new home?

A couple of friends at work (aircraft engineers who need to get out more) are after a complete machine and also they want to make a large scale R/C model of one and so appreciate any leads as to where they might get drawings from.

If anyone has contacts at Westlands drawing office or with any keepers of Wessex perhg
aps you could let me know. Apparently there is one living in a hangar at Benson.

Thanks

PS I'll post this on 'Rotorheads' as well.

There are a few around:

Demobbed - Out of Service British Military Aircraft

(You need to click on Aircraft and then choose Wessex.)

There's a Wessex fuselage in Smiths' scrapyard at Brightwell-cim-Sotwell, near Wallingford - A V Smith and Son

It's almost certainly an HC2 - came from Benson.

There's a complete one in a hangar at Strawberry. If you're not military, you could contact the Community Relations Officer to see if he would accept a visit.

The gate guardian (XT672, coded WE and named 'Aries') also looks fairly complete.

The one at Benson belongs to 606 RAuxAF Sqn and sits outside the building they share with the RAF Regiment FP Flt. It is 'work in progress' I believe.

Good one! Low Hours!

A good aircraft to get hold hold of since it had a Major out in Akrotiri about 1997. One more frame changed by MASU and the Airframe Hours would have been Zeroed! Almost a complete rebuild! Lovely old Lady!

Did the Wessex have a Nav? I've just been looking at some shots of us doing some flying with 84 and the loadie was a FL Nav called.. Haggarty (by the looks of it). In fact, he was always the loadie whenever we went flying with them. Well, I say loadie - he sat in the door and waved a lot.

Lot of the SAR units had Navs on the establishment trained as WOp/WMan. 72 Sqn had Navs towards the end of the Wessex life as did Sixty Sqn at Benson.
I believe 84 Sqn also had Navs due to the SAR role.

I believe it was a promotional path for the really hot-shot Navs....

If it was for "really hot shot navs" (surely a contradiction in terms!) why were they on the Wessex in the first place?

So they could hone their skills prior to getting posted to a fast jet squadron, due to the tremendous speeds the Wessex travelled at. 90 Kts into a stiff headwind at 2000' VFR is enough for anybody to cope with. The ground would just rush past in a blur making map reading extremely difficult.
Especially if you were down the back, looking aft but map-reading sideways correcting the 'hot-shot Nav'

Wessex HC-2

Evening

If its a Wessex HC-2 you are looking for, then look no further than Manston. They have just received a Wessex HC-2 in the shape of XV725. This aircraft arrived from RAF Cosford and it will be used in the role of a non-destructive crew trainer. So you could always try to persuade them to let you have it.

Manston have also recently received a Harrier GR-3 (XV768) and they are also due to receive two Tornados in the future.

Cheers
