Military Discount - Credit where it's due - on the M40
We often bemoan here how good the spams are and how bad the Brits are at giving discounts, so here's a BZ for one company.
One happened the other day to be using the M40 in uniform, and stopped mid-morning at a Service Area for a double espresso and piece of pecan pie, as one does.
Imagine my surprise and delight when, unasked for and not mentioned, a figure of 20% "Forces Discount" had been deducted from the bill.
Cannot of course name the coffee company, but think Spain in conjunction with "Brava", "Blanca" or "del Sol".
Fair made my day it did - and guess whose barristas I shall favour with my custom in future!

The baguette places in Moto services offer a good discount too, don't have to be in uniform. And Canon's health clubs...not sure what their coffee/baguettes are like though

Aye Moto shops have given a discount for years, well everyone except Simply Food.
Tighta&sed bloody M&S.
You even used to get discount on mags and newspapers meaning you paid less than retail for them!

Yep, my understanding with Moto is anything they sell from within their franchise (apart from tight ar$$ed M&S) will attract a discount. Burger King, Newspapers, sweeties, the general cafateria et al with the exception of tobacco products, phone cards, batteries and of course.....petrol. Only rider is the bill must be over £2.

BTW, M&S aren't just tight with the military, I currenty work for a company that has a major contract with M&S and even though we've had the contract for years and saved them a shedload of money in the past implementing cost saving measures which we weren't contractualy obliged to make we don't see a penny of thanks from them.

Mil Discount in Swindon
My SIL tipped me off that the outlet village in Swindon gives a 10% discount card to military personnel on production of a 1250. I invariably get it on production of my RAFA ID card. May work elsewhere in the country?
It includes the outlet stores, about 90% of them anyway - not including M&S! One other store we used last week wasn't on the list and the assistant told us they'd only been in there about a year and had to be in two years or so to be included on the card. Pick up a card at the information desk.

Whilst on a det a little while ago I flew in the UK with a UK based carrier. I had checked in with my passport and got taken for a few kg's excess baggage at £12 per kg. On return, I checked in with my mil ID - and the excess baggage charge was £3 per kg, without having to ask for it or anything. 'Mil excess charge' it said on the reciept. In fact the check-in girl said 'I'll hold your check in here, I won't process anyone else whilst you go and pay the excess - come straight back here, not the back of the queue, OK?' and then processed me pronto, with a smile.
Coming back from the Sandpit, I went through Gatwick with the same airline in civvies but with a grubby Bergan and other kit. I was about 30 from the front but the queue controller saw my kit and sent me straight to the next avbl desk.
You know who you are and all my friends and family now know too.

......but to be fair, when it comes to motorway grub, which is cheaper - M & S Simply Food at full price, or the others with a discount??

BK and the MOTO Forces discount scheme
Over the past few years I have taken to using MOTO Services in preference to the others because of the Forces discount benefits. Indeed, the discount brings the price of a BK meal down to the same as paid in an average high street instead of inflated mway prices.
However, last weekend I stopped at Castle Donington MOTO for a family pitstop, proferred my ID to the BK operative as usual, only to be told that the discount facility had been suspended by the company just the previous week.
Further purchases at the coffee franchise and MOTO food outlet still attracted the usual 20% discount! 
WIHIH and do MOTO (or The Sun) know that this is going on? (or did I just fall foul of a Darwin Award operative?) .

Yes, all of the UK McArthur Glen outlet villages give a discount brochure to the Armed Forces - just show your ID at the info desk.
(BTW, I'm not the BK 'operative' that Doodledog had the misfortune to meet at Castle Donington - bit of a long commute!)

Just a quick one for any ex HM Forces who receive a War Disablement Pension.
You can apply to the Service Personnel and Veterans Agency (SPVA) for a free War Disablement Pensioners' Status Card which is accepted by such as Moto and McArthur Glen etc for the military discount.
To obtain the War Disablement Pensioners Status Card just ring the SPVA on 0800 169 2277, answer a few questions to confirm your identity and your entitlement and the credit card sized Status Card will be with you in about 10 days.
