A Brace of Pumas.

Can a civvie ask a question, please? Two Pumas (at least I only saw two by the time I got outside) flew over my workplace today.
Their position when I saw them would be approx 1 mile east of the M1, and tracking along the southern edge of the M18, heading east.
If anyone can shed a bit of light on their destination, as they are rare beasties hereabouts, I would be obliged.
But, as they were at perhaps 1500 ft., and were apparently straight and level, not decending, they both had their undercarriages down, Again, can anyone tell me why this would be?
Thanks.
N.Z.

East from the M18? Sounds like the SF base in Grimsby to me.
