25 Sqn Disbanded

With 25 Sqn gone (for the time being) and 100 sqn being the only major user of Leeming.....will this be the beginning of the end of Leeming as a flying base? There is 1000+ personnel on base but non flying units.
There has been talk of the arrows coming to Leeming once Scampton "closes"? Is there any truth in the rumours?

I read a 'rumour' somewhere that there are plans to close down Leeming by April 2009??

As you say, I can't see Leeming justifying just 100 Sqn for the long term future, They 'MAY' relocate 100 Sqn to Valley or even Scampton??

A sad day was the 1st April, 90 years of 25, And the last Yorkshire Operational F3 Sqn.

I have also heard a 'rumour' that Linton's future is also under review??

Regards.

Leeming has one of the few north/south(ish) runways that can be used by FJ on the East coast. I suspect that it would be sensible to keep the airfield open with a token Sqn, such as 100Sqn, just to guarantee the valuable strip of concrete.

Caution: Logic applied to the above statement, the bean counters may not agree.

Suppose they could upgrade the East-West runway and use as an RLG for Linton. Also keeps the main runway available for emergencies and AT for the A6 guys based there.

Close Toppers and keep CF for the EFT lot.

think the SW/NE runway would cost too much to upgrade now, plus the HAS site is built at one end which makes difficult to do anything with. The UAS use a portion of it if the winds prevail in that direction

Surely only a mischievious rumour. There are some 850 or so personnel re-locating to Leeming from Brize Norton this summer.

Leuchars is safe. We got an official announcement on Thursday, the Leuchars will indeed get the Tiffie, and not Leeming.

it was also announced, that the 56 Sqn standard will not now be laid down as first feared, but will get transferred now, to ASTOR, as an OEU Sqn

A future for Leeming?

Sorry, slightly off thread.

Surely it's blindingly obvious. 10 miles up the road from Leeming is the biggest Army Garrison in Europe.

The Army uses a lot of the talents and services of the SH Force.

The SH Force have to trog all the way up north to provide those talents and services.

Move the SH Fleet to Leeming and keep RAF Yorkshire in existence.

Erm and what about the other 3+ Brigades that are stationed in the south?

"Jockistanis?" Is that meant to be funny? I find that comment rather insulting, once again.

I was going to write 'Porridge Wogs', but the DFMB* scoffers would probably think that marginally more insulting than 'Jockistanis'.....

Sheep fancier, you're not Viet Taff are you?

Sharpen up your banter filter!

*DFMB = Deep fried Mars Bar. A Jockistani culinary delight second only to that stuffed sheep's stomache thing they all bore us with every 25 Jan when they try to trot out 200 year old poetry which none of them actually understands.

Careful BEagle old-boy.

Buildings are going in between the Gym and the JRM - near the footy fields, but none lost, just a small group of trees and a swampy area, if I remember correctly.

No details on who is coming in, as I'm no longer a "resident", but the last I heard was the station is to become an A6 hub.
