Forces Discounts Brochure has all the good gen.

Top tip: bring your 1250 with you when you head off for your 2 weeks in Orlando this year - it cuts a lot of ice with Americans (brothers in arms etc), great conversation starter, plus it'll get you discounts virtually everywhere! All you have to do is ask.

NB: your 1250 will get you free entry for you and your family to all the Anheuser Busch parks - SeaWorld, Busch Gardens - plus you get to stand up and take a bow at the 'Heroes Salute' bit in the Shamu Stadium!

Ken will do anything to get his public transport numbers up. Is this the same Ken doing 'us' a favour, as the one who called IRA bombers in London, 'freedom fighters'?

Cnt.

Red Ken is doing it to save money. Why waste money flying troops out to the 'Stan when Al Quaeda/Taliban can kill them much more cheaply here on the buses??
It saves the terrorists from running the risk of being caught ripping off your cashcard at the local garage to get the money to go and "study in a Madrassa" too.
Good Man, at least we know who our friends are, the To$$er.

FFS! Don't you just love being banded together with the elderly, the infirm and the under 12's? (Oh, there may be something in that...anyone check the military TMES rates lately?). He's missed out students, hangers-on and the advance party from Sangatte Garrison...

Discounts off-the-beaten-track in US Question

Was going to start a new thread but the question sits well here. Later this year Milady Teeters and self are visiting the States a bit off the normal tourist beat.

It's a route proven last year by the Senior Teeterette and her chap - they speak highly of it. We fly to Chicago O'Hare, then a couple of days in the Windy City then a few days by slow-ish luxury train to the West Coast via Salt Lake City, then to LA and finishing in the City by the Bay, whence we return (very good value with a strong pound )

Have done a search but can't find much other than the normal run of East Coast/Disney/Orlando stuff. Any suggestions/recommendations/discounts with the trusty F1250/MoD90 or whatever it's called now? All contributions gratefully received.

New Fordz

Just saved £5000 of a brand new Ford S-Max vs local forecourt price (got a free cardigan into the bargain!)... well worth it! This was loads cheaper than even buying via a UK car broker. Mind you the car was manufacturered in Espanole... as they all are now... ooh the shame. It still does not qualify as an 'import though'. This ain't tax free either.

Ford and Vauxhall both do a good Mil discount.

BMI do a discount for flights. You need to phone them to get it (not available through the internet site) but it's worth having. I bought tickets for my wife and daughter to fly to Norwich. Would have cost £464 without the discount - but with the discount was only £202 (and most of that was tax )

Just ask, absobloodylutely everywhere. If the answer is no it won't be with a sneer but with a "sorry" and a look of regret. The rest of the time it'll probably be 10% to 25% off. Just don't be all British and reserved; pitch up (to wherever, cafe, shop, museum etc. but especially 'non-chain' retailers) and ask in a positive manner if they give a military discount. Even if there's no money off your sure to strike up a conversation with a friendly local who might point you to somewhere that does.

Enjoy the trip, keep off the beaten path: it's a great place to be. Rent a car whenever possible, you'll get to see much more of those fascinating and eccentric (world's largest ball of string sort of thing!) places that only America can serve up with a straight face. National parks are, mostly, To DIE FOR, and don't have railroad stations!

The Forces Discount Scheme is also available to us veterans, but we need to download a certificate of eligibility and then get it signed and stamped by a military unit. I can download the bumph OK, but can anyone advise me how I can get it suitably chopped?

I'd contact the (PRO/CCO/CRO/whatever the public facing officer on stn is called this week) of your nearest stn and ask if they could help. If you smed them the form with some sort of proof of service and address (letter from the Veterans' Agency about pension or somesuch?) I imagine they'd be happy to pop down to Gen Office and get it stamped; at the very least they should be able to point you in the direction of someone who can help.

You aren't allowed to go there in uniform anymore. It might offend the natives.
