Jerry Ward

I am sorry to have to report to those who know Jerry from the Tornado force and BBMF that he was seriously injured in a freak swimming accident in Cancun over the weekend.

His condition is not thought to be life threatening but he is in intensive care; his family have been flown out to be with him, along with management from his employers MyTravel.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Jerry and his family at this time and wish him a speedy recovery.

And Jerry was a very strong swimmer, part of the Laarburch and RAFG teams in the late 80s. Get well soon Jerry.

Jerry was on a stop-over in Cancun. He went for a swim alone, but in the lifeguard patrolled area and was reportedly washed onto the shore unconcious. It is thought that he was hit by a freak wave and probably forced down onto the seabed. He reportedly regained conciousness whilst being tended on the beach and was taken to the local hospital.

As I said earlier, his family are now with him and they are all being supported by his company who have sent a senior manager to CUN.We await further information and I will post here as soon as I hear any news.

The beaches at Cancun are a great place to be, but the waves, shelving and undertows are really dangerous, even when the Ocean is quite calm.

Banned my kids from the sea completely when there a few years ago, after seeing a couple get into trouble and need rescuing.

Good job that the pool at the Hotel (including swim-up bar ) was top-notch.

Hope Jerry makes a full and speedy recovery.

I remember Jerry joing 56 Sqn when I held there a long time ago. A thoroughly decent chap who always had time to chat in the crewroom and share stories of daring do.

Get well soon Jerry.

Following his accident in Cancun, Jerry was repatriated to the U.K yesterday with full medical support. He was immediately transferred to an Intensive Care Unit in the local area. Despite a long and tiring flight, he was in good spirits on landing and was able to thank the medical staff for their care. Both Jerry and his wife would like his friends and colleagues to be made aware of the full extent of his injuries.

On walking out of the sea in Cancun, Jerry was struck by a wave which toppled him forwards, he landed awkwardly and his head impacted the sand; this impact chipped one of his vertebrae which immediately restricted the flow of blood to his spinal cord. As a result, he has no feeling or movement below his neck. Current medical opinion suggests that a full recovery is unlikely.

At this time Jerry and his wife have requested no visitors until he is sufficiently able, but would then greatly appreciate all contact. Given the open nature of this forum I am reluctant to release further details for obvious reasons.

May I suggest that any of you who wish to visit or simply have correspondence redirected to them, make contact with, the PA to the Chief Pilot at MyTravel Airways.

Any further information I will obviously pass on to you all. On behalf of Jerry, thank you all for you posts - I will see to it that he receives them all.

Carepages.com

Flickroll

As an alternative to this 'open forum' how about using 'carepages.com'. Fairly recently my Boss has a serious accident and this website service proved to be a brilliant way of keeping friends and family informed and for us to leave messages of support etc.....

Just a thought...

Sorry to hear about the accident - slightly off thread, but wasn't it in Cancun that Kirsty MacColl was mown down by a local celeb in a speedboat, whilst diving, and killed? Sounds like a dodgy spot for watersports
