So we can look forward to a Navy that consists of 2 big carriers (maybe) with no aircraft, a few amphibious ships & no frigates/destroyers to protect them in a task force - at 'Last Night of the Proms' will the singing have to be 'Brittania ruled the waves'?

Easy
Miss out the second Brittainia - viz
"Rule Brittania, used to rule the waves" - still rhymes
I suspect the Olympic 2012 fun police will be advocating this shortly
By then though, the "Last night of the Proms" (if it still exists) will only be allowed if there is not a gathering of more than 5 people whose DNA matches the database, and it must not be held at the Albert Hall -

We will soon only have the capacity field an amphibious Task Group. Anything beyond that and we will have to hope that USA/NATO/EU will cover the gaps for us. A force element that isn't directly needed for Joint operations is clearly expendable.

Was it last week (time goes so fast these days) that UK PLC was declaring itself a serious "stake holder" (funny, I always think of Van Helsing) in exploiting the mineral wealth of the ocean floor. Is that OK with all you foreign Johnies?
