How is eyesight tested

Hi guys and girls, I am currently doing some medical research for a university project that my CO is also quite interested in.

Could any of you tell me how your eyesight was tested when you joined whichever military you are in. Also, i would like to know if the method for testing eyesight varies depending on your role in the military.

Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

If it hasn't changed, you just read the standard eye chart, and do a colour blindness test. If you need specs then a visit to the opticians for all the fancy tests.

Use the search facility on the OASC thread - the RAF and RN aircrew reqs are there. Take the reqs, pay £20 for a civvy eyetest and Bob is your dad's brother.

Although colourblind I was cleared to join as a GD/P with CP 3. I passed the lantern test at Biggin Hill. 1988 medical.

Don't forget the tests for poor low-light sensitivity (night blindness) [differentiate the bars at differing light levels] and glaucoma [puff of air checking internal eye pressure].

Also the "field-of-view" test [look straight ahead and try to detect movement beside your head].

When I did medical for the RNZAF I went to an Opthamologist (sp?) and he did the extensive test, with all the different lenses, laser sights, peripheral vision, etc etc.

Took about 40 mins?

However for my CPL medical renewal, I got asked to read the bottom line on a wall chart, and read the colour-blind book!

They asked me to read the chart as far down as I could and I went "errrrm, E ... I think"

Last time I had an eye test I went in with a Polish pilot. When the the M.O. asked him if he could read the chart, he said
'Read it! I was at school with him.........'

Memorize the chart over the years so as your eyesight goes, you still pass the test. If only I thought I was joking ....
