Perhaps some sort of housing allowance would suit? The USAF have BAH, or free quarters with no utility fees of course:

Right i'll say £250K home.

Solictors buy and sell = £1200 to £1500
Sellers pack £700
Mortgage get out clause £295
Mortgage reservation fee/set up £495 to £1495 (for a good fixed rate mortgage)
Valuation fee £250.

Am I Bovered
When we sell our 3 bed semi "up North", because of a posting, and have to buy a similar 3 bed semi "down South", it only seems fair that the military should fork out the extra cost because of regional house price differences. Especially if there are no service quarters available.
But what happens when a bloke down south with a 3 bed semi gets posted "up North".............
Would we have to pay back the 100K or so , at 4 days salary a month, for the next umpeen years (around 20 years in my case)
I just can't see JPA being able to cope with that one.
2 years, 7 months, 21 days left

There are times when I would love to turn on the tele first thing in the morning to hear General X telling us that a military coup has taken place and Gordon Brown and co have met with an unfortunate "accident".

If the RAF guys are getting £5000, why aren't the navy?
Sympathy I reckon !
I think the last statistic stated that 70% of the RN owned their own homes. Sadly the Army and RAF cannot afford that.

Hmmmm, interesting. I didnt realise that. So the guys in the Navy are better paid so that they can afford their own house whilst the RAF get given £5000 ....not quite sure of the logic there nor why we can't all get paid the same...

All of the Navy are better paid....
Apparently 70% of the RN own their own houses but the RAF and the Army can't afford them....so therefore, the RN must be better paid....which makes sense seeing as we dont get £5000 for free

More needed to be done on housing and pay in order to retained troops because "people are more likely to stay if we look after them properly".

VecVecCOCK,
Why don't you just go and post on XBOX or something. Everything you ever spout is complete Cr$p and you are either extremely deluded or just being deliberately atagonistic. Your comment about RN personnel never being posted away from their families might be true for WAFUs like you who spend their entire lives in Culdrositon but the vast majority of the real Navy, spend a significant amount of time away. You do them all a dis-service by suggesting that life is better in the Dark Blue.
On the subject of FQs, the only way most people could afford to own their own homes in the South East, is by leaving the service and using the gratuity as a deposit. (£5000-£10000 is derisory). House Prices are way above what they should be and completely unaffordable to the average sailor, soldier or airman. (Of course VECCOCK probably gets an allowance from mummy!)
I noticed that this very issue was raised in Des Browne's CVF statement. "most servicemen want to own their own homes", yes ...but not in the current economic climate.
Another issue, what is the level of marital breakdown in the services. What percentage of service personnel are paying child maintainence etc, living in FQs with second wives/husbands, trying to build a home because they cannot afford to buy another house.
The beauty of FQs is that is allows a flexible, mobile force who can move their families at minimla expense.
You watch........the next thing to be attacked will be BSA!
Chip, chip, chip.................

Also not to be ignored is the financial aspect of the high to low cost jobs market.
A job on the M4 corridor may pay £27k and only half that up North.
OK it may be cheaper up North but when you move back down south again "And what salary were up earning before?"
