New Rules On Rates Of Climb And Descent in UK
Not a spotter, honest.
Couple of quick Qs for the UK-based FJ mates out there; have you been told about the new Rates of Climb and Descent (ROCD) limitations coming in on 5 Jul 07?
How precise is the info you get on your VSI? What is the maximum calibrated rate you have indicated on the VSI? I've heard 6000fpm, but I guess this varies from type to type.
Any response much appreciated and here or by PM if you prefer.

Yep, we know and they do apply unless we get unrestricted ht changes approval (only required in CAS).
The up&downometer is not terrifically accurate, but given a small margin for error good enough for staying within the limits.
The scale varies but plus/minus 6000' is a common one.
As you can see from 30mRad's link - it is not too much of a restriction, just one more thing to consider!!!!!!!!!!!

but Para 3
. So Class B is excluded then? or do we assume it isn't from

The CAA has directed that a ROCD restriction of 8000fpm within CAS (Classes A-E) of the UK FIRs will be imposed from 5 Jul 07.
The conditions under which higher ROCD, exceeding the 8000fpm restriction, may be used when operating inside CAS (Classes A, C, D & E) are set out below:
The ROCD restriction does not apply to aircraft operating in Class F & G airspace, active TRAs, MTAs, MDAs or Danger Areas

SA, please disregard all previous, thanks for the clue. I'd copied Class C arriving but not Class B departing. The moral; cross check.
201.110.2 Class B. Not allocated in the UK.
Read all about this just last week and my but am I glad that I left area radar before this kicks in.
When I first read it, it just struck me as an overly confusing document attemtpting to legislate for what should be common sense. Of course what didn't help matters was rather a large number of area controllers aiming Typhoons and occasionally Hawks at GAT and then coordinating climbs/descents above/below said GAT. From my conversations with the wonder jet's crews they were always more than happy to turn 30 degrees off track if it just meant that they could go straight to flight level nose bleed.
Oh well, stuck with it now

Having been dealing with this little baby for a while now it appears it is not all doom and gloom.
Yes we now have added protection for our civvy mates....is that a bad thing? It's all to do with TCAS resolutions.
Anyway, having discussed the issue with the fast jets they are going to be, and usually are anyway, ROCD compliant when within CAS and for the majority of the time elsewhere.
It will only be when given full tactical freedom in relatively benign airspace that we will 'release the hounds' outwith the 8k per min restriction. Obviously if a sitch arises when we have to restrict then the terminology will allow us to do so.
My only gripe is that when we are trying to cut down on the ammount of admin crap we are mandated to spout; we have to add more crap to the existing crap making one big heap o' crap ......Thanks Civil!

SA, I think we should also thank the new boys at CGY for consistently shoving the aircraft on its backside on climbout and busting the odd level. That said, I'm not sure this will be a major intrusion on Human Rights, just more 'pants' phraseology to remember.
