A sensible move as having a beard really does help out there - just ask the army that have been following this line for a while (although I don't know whether it is official - just good sense!) indeed, this rule shouldn't just be for the regt, but for all of our servicemen*.

The Regt has been doing this for a while in Afg - it's not that new, 51 is just capitalising on the news value. The point of wearing a beard is largely to key-in to the locals' perception of warriors with beards.
It's pretty much accepted practice to not shave when in the trees (jungle ops, rather than swinging from them, which is more of a pasttime).
