Logbook Binding
Hello all,
Just a trawl for helpful hints. Need to get my logbook rebound and not having any luck finding a suitable binder.
Before anyone mithers about the search function I have and unfortunately RJ Bond in Somerset is either so old he can't hear his phone anymore (01935 827762) or just doesn't want to talk to me.
So, anyone got any ideas?

Have you tried Cambinders in Cambridge? Details:
Cambinders Unit 1 Laundry Lane Cherry Hinton Road Cambridge Cambridgeshire CB1 8DH Tel: 01223 244466
They will bind the logbook in the original type of cover, or in leather, and they can inlay your initials/details on the spine and front.
They did a grand job of binding my 3 logbooks in leather (with a case) for about 80 quid.

Cambinders good - just beware however - if yer logbooks are well old like mine and critically different sizes, the bound triple version looks great fm the outside, but open it up and pages all different lengths - same at the top but unable to trim them all to the same size. Also very tricky to write in volume three cos wrist has to be 2 inches off the surface whilst writing. Kinda wish I'd left em alone and just had three logbooks. Nice to still be using logbook three mind! Old/Bold etc!

Log Book Binders
Does anyone have updated contact details for Cambinders. The telephone number above does not appear to work?
Also, does anyone have any of the older blank RAF Pilot log books (F414). This is the version pre Apr 2000 when the page dimensions were altered slightly?

I used Mr Bond and he does an excellent job but he is somewhat eccentric. He may, or may not, answer the phone and he seems to have a backlog of work but if you can get hold of him the end result is very good indeed.

I recently got my logbook back from R J Bond and he did a fantastic job. The phone number posted previously is extant...
If no joy (be patient!) then I suggest a trip to his workshop at Stoke sub Hamdon.
He charged IRO £65 by the way, and threw in a free leather bookmark!

I can vouch for Cambinders. On the logbook front, I tried about 5 different SPFSs around the RAF - Wyton had the older version that I wanted (I guess they don't get much call for logbooks anymore!). This was about 4 years ago though.

Is it just me or did anyone else get massively irritated when the new and utterly cr@p logbooks arrived a few years ago. Irrespective of the size difference, they seemed to have been ordered by someone for whom a logbook was just another stationery item - hence cheapest and lowest quality possible.

Just another quick question re: Mr Bond and/or Cambinders.
Unfortunately my grandfather passed away recently and several members of the family would like copies of his log books. He flew Lancasters on 83 Sqn and 44(Rhodesia) Sqn, earning a DFC, before nearly 40 years as a civilian AT pilot. Does anyone know if a company like Cambinders would do decent bound copies of log books or is there a specialist that might do a better job?

I have just had my second aircrew logbook done by Mr Bond and he did a really excellent job.
I would advise that you sort out exactly what you want done as the options are endless; the colour and texture of the leather, the style of wings, borders, lettering additional pages, joining 2 books etc etc. He has very many examples in his workshop, indeed it looks like most of the Fleet Air Arm and half the RAF have had their books done at some stage in their career.
If you drop off or pick the book up personally, make sure you give yourself at least 2 hours for a masterclass in all aspects of bookbinding from the beginnings of time. Actually it was fascinating. Workshop looks a little 'busy' but my book was completed within about 3 weeks.
I would give a very strong recommend if you want a really professional job in a realistic timeframe and at a VERY realistic price.
