RAF Scampton

Quick question from a (soon to be) ppl.

Is it possible to fly into Scampton for a vsit.? I am interested in the history of the place especially 617 squadron as you might imagine, as well as the red arrows.
Who do I need to contact, has anything like this been done before?
Thanks

I see one post has disappeared

Anyway it would cost IRO £30, or a little more, based on AUW. You would also need about £1m worth of insurance.

Then there is the question of timing as the resident unit can take up a lot of runway and airspace capacity. That is why they have their own airfield!

Of course there's always flying into another airfield around there - Coningsby might offer you a chance to trawl around BBMF (but ring first - DEFINITELY no promises as I'm not sure on their visitor policy). However, Coningsby would also allow a visit to Woodhall Spa, the Petwood House hotel and Scampton is near enough. If you get to the Petwood, ask to see the Squadron Bar as there are some interesting historical artifacts. The one that springs to mind is the branch off a tree hung across the top of the bar which came through the bomb-aimers plexi-glass window during LL evasion, I think!!!!

If you let me know your aircraft details I can find source the landing and parking rates. You should be able to land there, book in through station op's or ATC.

Thanks fantaman, I don't have a date in mind yet given the current weather, but it would probably be me and an instructor in a PA28-140 or PA28-160.

Cheers

Scampton doesn't have a Stn Ops in the conventional sense - RAFAT is self-supporting in this respect. ATC is your best bet, and I see fabs has already given you a pointer.

As for timing, it's nearly that time of year when RAFAT go on their pre-season trg deployment, but I am not sure what the gen is regarding availability of facilities when they are away - you might find it actually makes the whole thing more expensive, especially if SerCo has to provide cover just for you.

The 'Museum' is only open by appointment - again ATC should be able to point you in the right direction.
