One of the best displays of the Reds is at Dartmouth, down the estuary/valley at what looks like masthead height.

I suspect your time in the RN was when it was "Rum, Bum and Baccy"
Now the Rum and Baccy has gone, is it still enjoyable, and are you still hot bunking and living in those disgusting 'transit cabins' when ashore?
Oh for a life on the ocean wave!

Having worked with the RAF for many years there are just two reasons for joining the RN instead of the RAF.
1. Uniform ...... Why would any youngster want to join the RAF when a) you all look like RAC Patrolmen b) You have to wear brown gloves, very 1940's. Instead of looking like a bag of s*it tied in the middle you could look like Tom Cruise (only a little taller).
2. When two or more servicemen get together and the 'When I Was In' dits start the RAF guys chips in with 'When I was in Scotland, Falklands, Iraq, Germany (no more), Cyprus' (for a VERY lucky few). Where as the the steely-eyed naval aviator chips in with 'When I was in Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, California, Bora Bora, South Africa, Antartica, Tahiti, Chile, India, etc etc etc.

I got turned down by the RAF, so I 've joined the RN, but I'll spend all my service career claiming this was my first choice, whilst all the while making surreptitious advances to transfer to the light blue at the earliest opportunity....

The new Commander 'T' at the College has brought back Divisions, and Period 0s (or EMAs as they were) are still very much in existence.
Having passed out of the College two days ago, I can now actually join the 'real' Navy - after a couple of years training at Crab/Joint establishments first.......................
