Israel, the Arabs and Iran
Interesting piece, raising the subject, in so many words, of the "Shia cCrescent" again. The subject has gone undr cover since the end of the Israel-Lebabon conflict, but it is still bubbling away: Mideast Realignment: Could Iran Unite Arabs and Israelis?

We have come a long way from the days before Gulf War 1 when the Saudi media never used the word "Israeli" without adding "enemy" after it. The word "enemy" was dropped in recognition of Israel's restraint in not responding militarily to Saddam's scud attacks. Iran has for a long time now been regarded in Saudi as the number one threat to peace within the sunny arab world - probably ever since the occupation of the holy mosque.
The recent decision to construct a border fence all along the Saudi/Iraqi border indicates how seriously they view the shia threat and the old saying "my enemy's enemy is my friend" indicates the need for good relations with Israel.
