RIAT was hoot!
Weather was hot and we got there early enough not to get caught in any traffic and drove straight in.

There seemed to be some bonzer hangover shared out amongst some of the particpants, but hey.....!

Displays good! The Chinook was doing things it really should NOT do!! Ace display. Prolly the best on the day (sun)
Reds were good as always, but there did seem to be a few times when they were not there. What I'm trying to say is that they had such good weather and venue it was such a big display area that they seemed to go missing at times.

Thanks to all the ground and aircrew who let me and Number one son (9 yrs old) into cockpits etc. The C130 crew (USAF) and B-1B crew who went out of their way to show us around was marvelous.

Much respect to the Sabb Grippen team who seemed to have the best "gizzits" of the show as number one son came away with 5or6 differentbits and pieces of givaways. Nice one Swedes...made a little boy very happy.

All in all a great day out for Dad and son who saw everything they wanted to.

Missed the announcement re the reds and Vickers funbus and first I knew about it was overhead..so no pics of that. Ho hum.

RAF Static...seemed to have one of each on display and all crew were pleased to talk to anyone. Well done lads and lassies

You should complain to the organisers. Its not like it cost you £30 to get in only to miss the one thing you went to see. You have all my sympathies at missing the canberra..........

I went there Sunday. The Chinook according to the PA did not display on Saturday due to being called up for deployment so the static example took it's place.
That particular display was the best Helicopter display i have seen in many years.

Great stuff on the whole yesterday, esp:

- Swiss F18, very exciting high-energy display
- The Reds with the Funbus, very nice
- Chinook, as already mentioned. Merlin and Blue Eagles v. good aswell
- RAF Herc Tac Demo, looking sharp
- Mig29 OVT, ridiculous summersaulting and "hovering"
- Osprey - display was fairly benign, but interesting to see and hear it all the same
- Team Aguila and Spanish Typhoon, great to look at, but seemed to take them a lot of time/airspace to get the formation together. Their 7-ship formation landing is something to behold though

Adverse comment: The B1 was airborne for well over an hour, but we saw it for about 30 secs. Yes, there a few to beat for sheer power and noise, but this seems like a waste of AVTUR to me?

On the whole, well done RIAT. Yes, it certainly looked like overall a/c numbers were well down, but I think it's to their credit that they still put on a good show.

You are assuming i am a spotter, of which i am not. I have no such 'book' or do i write down 'numbers'.
I am not in the forces or do i pretend to be either. I am an enthusiast yes, but i certainly don't sit there and write down some poxy numbers that are stenciled on airframes!
I went to the airshow to enjoy the air display like all the others, if i have an opinion about the state of our forces, in particular the RAF then i am entitled to state it here. If you don't agree then thats fine, state it, it is a discussion afterall, but don't fanny around offending others. (I do consider the spotter assumption as offending).

Can't disagree with razor one little bit - it was clear display of the RAF's shortfall and weakness of numbers.

Frankly, i thought the display was pretty poor compared to other RIATs. I have been assured by a good friend on the engineering team there, that they 160 aircraft down on last year - clearly that shows something!

Prices, as usual, were too high, and before everyone kicks off about the cost of the British Grand prix or the cost of a West End Show, I accept its still good value for money. Its just the constant annual hype in prices that hacks me off.

And yes, I know most will say 'Ah but it all goes to charity' well, even the most blind amongst us know that is NOT true. Who pays for the huge pi** up afterwards?

Anyway, back to Razors input: I think his comments are just and fair, and his one about the Chinook display is 100% on the button!

Kind regards to all
TSM

Yep, but I am sure that the Brits in Beirut will be enjoy the Chinook display far more than the RIAT crowd...

I wonder how they got there so quick....

Dont like spotters then? Or do you think they are weird? I am sorry if the RAF are too busy for you, maybe you should write to the MOD aswell as RIAT.

Top tip if you think £30 per adult a bit OTT

Why not go to the numerous park and view farmers fields to the west of the airfield, refreshments, toilets easy in and out (and in again !)

£10 per car and however many adults, kids, beer and food that you can fit inside.

Oh and most of the aircraft are displaying right overhead !

Absolutely fantastic ! Followed by beers at the footie club campsite

Fun weekend, shame I missed the Mig !

Went for my first IAT and enjoyed it, although the regulars felt disappointed by:

the numbers of aircraft that went tech
the lack of the B52 display
the occasional 'visit' from the B1
the Typhoo displays seemed a bit 'samey'

My own little criticisms were

that the aircraft didn't always display along the full display line so we missed stuff
the commentaries were often more than a little naff (the SERCO one was dreadful and the USAF Historic Flight one - well, the less said about that, the better)

anything would be appreciated.
Thanks

They had tea-making displays too? Glad I didn't go if that was the best the RAF could offer.

No, I dont unfortunately. There again I didnt get a shot of the three-ship VC10 formation launched for a dining in night on the Friday before the show either.

Did somebody mention overstretch for AT?

R and P,

The 3-ship was for the 40th Anniversary and was attended by a number of distinuished guests. Hats-off to the fellas who gave up their Firday night to fly the jets that were back on the road on Saturday.

The fly-past at RIAT was also to mark the 40th Anniversary. There was no static display because there were no aircraft available.

Your comments re overstretch exemplify your lack of understanding of the matter.

D-I.

Amazing coincidence then that there happened to be three jets and volunteer crews at Brize and available to fly for what was a well planned evening of sentiment and quoffing, all for the distinguished guests et al. AT tasking even managed to spare a herk to drop the Falcons as I recall. I suppose the ground engineers all gave up there Friday night as well?

Great party - did you go?
