Curious WW2 RAF Offr collar badges: what?

Hi chaps, does anyone remember the LWT series "Piece of Cake", from Derek Robinson's book of the same name? This had a so-called RAF Hornet Squadron from pre 1939 up to the BoB.

Firstly, is this the series that had Robson Green as a dodgy Flt Lt?

Secondly, what on earth was the significance of the mini-RAF badges worn on the lapels of his No1s during the programmes? I mean as in the standard ORs cap-badge, letters in wreath-and-crown, the slightly-modified RFC one? Was this just an over-zealous bit of dressing-room bullsh1t, or was it genuine? If so, what did it signify?

If this query has just entered the wrong airspace, please feel free to ignore, but all constructive return traffic welcome.

Do you mean this Piece Of Cake?

No sign of Robson Green though.

Ah, the series may actually have been "Ain't Misbehavin" from ten years ago ....these collar badges I'm referring to are just visible in this pic, with Robson in the sidecar beside Jerome Flynn:

Is it just film-maker flim-flam, or were these badges ever *actually*worn in WW2? If so, by which branch? I have never seen these OR's mini-forage cap badges worn by Offrs on the collar in any other pics from the era (by Aux, VR, MOs, Edn Offrs etc, all of which brass badges I would instantly recognise)
