Reds downed by Cessna

Just noticed in one of the papers (express?) that the red Arrows had to abandon a display this weekend and "perform emergency landings" (paper hype) after a Cessna 172 wandered into their display path.

Think it was at Kemble airfield.

Any genuine info on this?

I think, sadly, the time has come to ban all hobby flying (including pseudo-flying related activities such as gliding)...It seems, alas, the only option.

Surely this is justification for carrying a couple of 'winders when they display!

Absolutely concur. The non-operational hobbyist Reds (and BBMF etc) are complete anachronisms and need chopping soonest.

Chesty - agree, I think to be fair however the on-station E3 should issue a couple of warning calls on guard before the clearance to engage is issued...

Funnily enough, there was an article in the latest GASCo Flight Safety magazine on this very subject.

may be some CAP on airshows. would a lynx with a couple of GPMGS be quick enough to catch most Civvy fun flyers? Intercept then make follow to covnenient airfield were aircraft will be siezed. If the Civvy piolt wont comply a few bursts of 1:1 tracer might encourage him its is a good idea to do what the Nice chap in the Green helicopter wants. Bit less expensive than a sidewinder

Nurse - believe similar tactic (albeit without the tracer) used by SH during G8 ops - bet the cheeser got a bit of a shock when the green helo rocked-up on his wing as he approached the restricted area!!

My first trip in uniform to the US was to 1st SOW in FL. The MH-53 with door and ramp mounted .50 cal MGs would be my platform of choice. Not as fast as the Lynx of course, but cking ugly.

As a civvie fun flyer myself I'm beginning to feel a little uneasy

Have decided to go for tube & fabric construction for reduced/nil radar returns. Perhaps I should also consider brushing up on nap of the earth flying and oil injection to the exhaust to lay a smoke screen

Seriously though, I will check notams before every flight. No excuses in this (internet) day & age.

So, who's first to have a go against me? Dissimilar or what ?! Up against an 85hp rag & tube microlight. Interesting scenario methinks

Not so long as you are more than 500ft from any person, vessel, vehicle or structure. I thought somebody would bite on that one

Note: the 500ft rule is a 'distance from' rule, not a 500ft minimum height rule.

Thanks Micro,

'Cos we on this military aircrew forum really need reminding of what the rules are.

Thanks for keeping us in line. Now watch out for those tracers!

And to think you chaps had a GR4 at Kemble to carry out the intercept.
But then again, it made a terrible noise soon after bringing the throttles up and then the buckets went out.......

Gr4 at kemble

Eew. Must have been interesting. As I recall Kemble is short (but obviously meeting the requirement of GASOs ) with no arresting thingies. Well done for bringing it to a safe stop. Glad I didnt have to get it home after the engine change
