CENTRAF releases airpower summary for June 21st 06

6/21/2006 - SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) -- U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials released the airpower summary for June 21.
In Afghanistan June 20, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs and a B-1B Lancer provided close-air support for coalition forces taking small-arms fire from Taliban extremists near Tarin Kowt. The B1-B expended precision-guided munitions on a compound where the extremists fled to, ending the engagement.
In a separate engagement, A-10s conducted precision strikes on Taliban extremists in a tree line near Kandahar. The A-10s expended numerous cannon rounds, ending the engagement.
A-10s, a B1-B and Royal Air Force Harrier GR-7s also provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with enemy forces near Gereshk and Tarin Kowt.
In total, coalition aircraft flew 25 close-air-support missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. These missions included support to coalition and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.
Six Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.
In Iraq, coalition aircraft flew 60 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.
Royal Air Force Tornado GR-4s provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Al Mahmudiyah.
In addition, 12 Air Force, Navy and Royal Australian Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. Navy fighter aircraft performed in non-traditional ISR roles with their electro-optical and infrared sensors.
Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew 140 airlift sorties, delivered 530 tons of cargo and transported 2,550 passengers. This included more than 34,800 pounds of troop resupply air-dropped in central Afghanistan.
Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada, Japan and Korea flew in support of either OIF or OEF.
On June 19, Air Force, Royal Air Force and French air force tankers flew 44 sorties and off-loaded almost 2.7 million pounds of fuel.
