For those who can't use Google Earth, eg Linux or Mac users, The Register has the images here: http://www.theregister.com/2006/01/09/google_lancaster/

Re: Lancaster over Huntingdon

Mildly OT, but can anyone explain why parts of the UK (Thames Valley, for example) are in a much higher res than most of the UK, where the res is really pretty poor?

Because that's where the important people live!

Presumably 't North is in grainy monochrome like Coronation Street of the 1960s, the 'Lland devoid of vowells' is some sort of swamp colour and Jockistan is a porridge coloured smudge?

Re: Lancaster over Huntingdon

High-res required for targeting information, perhaps?

Oddly enough, the Deputy PM's constituency (and one of his residences) is also highly visible. I may not be far off the mark.

Re: Lancaster over Huntingdon

RAF Fairford is high res, a single-seater with very large wingspan is clearly visible parked on the north-eastern dispersals!

Re: Lancaster over Huntingdon

I believe that those areas which need it are slowly being updated. Some of the areas that are hi-res are something like 3 years old by all accounts.

Good fun looking at bases and airports however. Nellis, Edwards, Beale etc all interesting..........and as for Davis Monthan - that's some collection!!

Artist - It's related to property prices. Dearer houses get sharper pictures. The cheapo bits are blurred out of good taste.

Re: Lancaster over Huntingdon

I can date the hi-res section at the W end of Berkshire - the A34/M4 underpass was just laid out, and a gas pipeline was being dug in - so it's three years old I think, four at a pinch.

Aldermaston is in hi-res, while the secret Oxfordshire helibase is in low-res

A quick glance shows Hull, Newcastle and Dundee in glorious hi-res. Good taste????

Re: Lancaster over Huntingdon

They're just trying to show how u dont want to live note the southwest is suitably blurry not like there's much of interest down here anyway... I mean, who would want to be based near the north cornwall/devon coast? Crazy idea... much rather be in the far, far, far north of scotland!

OK, apart from a 737 and a couple of Pave Hawks, there's nothing there.

But there might have been

Re: Lancaster over Huntingdon

Ah yes, but look at Faslane - 56 03 33.01 N 4 48 43.04W - the men in the black Omegas have been round to Google and smudged the picture.

As for the Lanc - I can't get the same resolution on the piccies as in the 'the register' picture. Anyone know why?

Re: Lancaster over Huntingdon

Don't know what version of Google Earth you are using, Safeware, but latest is 3.0.0762 and gives better than the earlier resolution. However, might be more likely that your computer screen resolution is set too low. Control Panel - Display - Settings - Screen Resolution. If you set it to max for your system it will give best result.
