Re: RAF Kirton Lindsay

Hallo AonP, welcome to PPRuNe!

KiL's accn is okay. I've stayed in the Officers' and Sergeants' Mess and an H-Block and it's all pretty standard. If you're in the Mess, it's an old-fashioned '38-pattern Mess á la Coltishall. Rooms are pretty decent but could stand to be modernised a little (ISTR curtains in every room falling down if you pull them too far). The last time I was there the food was above-average, not as good as Boulmer, though.

When you do get there, pay a visit to the local curry-house in Kirton village - The Ganges, if I remember correctly. VERY good!

Enjoy!

Good Lord!!
K-i-L still in existence??
Thought it would have long since been converted to a prison or housing estate!
Was there, for about eight weeks, almost exactly 50 years ago It was an aircrew cadet holding unit and cold as a witch's mammary! The, then, authorities decided that it would be good for our morale to aid the local farming establishment in harvesting their cabbages!! yes, really. Life was indeed different then! I can categorically state that cutting cabbages in the wilds of Lincolnshire in early January is excruciatingly cold and painful and, quite definitely, a very poor morale builder
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be

It's Kirton-in-Lindsey (with an 'e'); comes from the 'old' county of Lindsey which is part of Lincolnshire.
It's probably in a hell of a state having been occupied by pongos for many years.

Re: RAF Kirton Lindsey

Kirton Lindsey/Kirton In Lindsey/Kirton-In-Lindsey. All seem to be acceptable round here.

Officially, there is no RAF Kirton in Lindsey Officers' Mess. The RAF Scampton Officers' Mess is at Kirton in Lindsey. The RAF Scampton WOs' and SNCOs' Mess is at RAF Scampton (since 4 Jan 06). ORs working at both sites live in the blocks at Kirton in Lindsey.

KiL is a nice place to live, but blooming cold at times (those times being Jan-Dec each year!) and the houses are v expensive to heat. There is a pub, Chinese, Chip Shop, and Indian Restaurant within walking distance of the KiL Site. The gym there is also considerably more modern than that at Scampton (so I'm told!).

Looking around the Site itself, KiL is in better condition than Scampton. Also, KiL has an airmens' mess, but at Scampton all ranks eat at the WOs' and SNCOs' Mess.

And you have the delights of Scunthorpe om your doorstep - tee hee!
(I'm allowed to laugh I was 'dragged' up there)
Then again Brigg (a local Market town) used to have over 20 Pubs, so it is not all doom and gloom.....

With the move of the comms hub to Leeming the Hansard statement hints at a further review of ASACS sites:
"Increased site preparation cost estimates at RAF Scampton have caused us to review whether this location remained the best value for money option for a communications hub. This work has now concluded and, subject to Trades Unions consultation, I have decided that the RAF communications hub will be formed at RAF Leeming (North Yorkshire) instead of RAF Scampton as this will be significantly more cost effective.
This means that communications personnel would move from RAF Sealand to RAF Leeming by April 2006. Communications personnel from RAF Brize Norton and RAF High Wycombe would move to RAF Leeming in 2007. The future location of ASACS units, currently at RAF Scampton, RAF Kirton-in-Lindsey and RAF Boulmer, will be the subject of further work."
Does anyone have any clue what will be included, will we all end up back down the bunker at Boulmer? A fair chance of another U-turn I think!

Funny how the wheel turns and Rapier Barracks returns to the Service from whence it came......

All I can remember is the wind is bitter all year round.......!

Things have changed and in particular the road infrastructure has improved so that it is actually possible to get away for the weekend........

Please respect the ghost in the West Wing of the Mess - sad story but the spirit is benign, if on occasion 'playful'!

Several small observations:

1 Previous poster brought up in Scunthorp... If Typho put the T in Britain, who put "that word" in Scunthorp??

2. KIL is cold from Jan to Dec. Excellent. Can't think of a better place to store Fighter Controllers.

3. Why don't all CRC's have c/s. A suitable one for the Scampton one might perhaps be based on one of the dams, but be pronounced "Moaner". Quite suitable for the average FC person.

4. Comment on previous thread about future of Scampton/Boulmer etc "When are they going to send us back down the bunker" Answer: The sooner the better as far as I am concerned. We can then lock the door, and sell off the site for housing.
