Cold War, Dirty Science

Shown on BBC4 2100-2200 tonight.
Were these Service volunteers for 'research' at Porton Down misled, or were they simply looking to make extra cash on top of their pay?
Having seen plenty of requests for volunteers for such tests in SROs during my time, the general feeling seemed to be you had to be mad (or seriously short of cash) to want to do it.
Thoughts?

(Mods: please feel free to move this if it's on the wrong forum)

There was a time I'd give my right arm to do tests at Porton Down.....well ok, just the epidermis of my right arm then.

I know of one CPL tecchie back in the 1990s that volunteered for everything he could think of, just to get away from the factory work at Twin Peaks in St Athan for a while. I know Porton Down was on his to-do list, but he dodged the bullet and got sent to Cosford as an instructor instead.
