Honestly though, which of us can really say we've not done something similar

I can for one. I've done some daft things but nothing remotely 'similar'.

Anyway, the last time I put my weapon on the cistern in a public lavatory ..... no, I won't go down that route.

Not forgetting the Wg Cdr who was on his way to/from Northwood, and left his briefcase containing highly classified paperwork at the car supermarket that used to be on the A40, now on the N Circular, in about 1991/2.

WTF was the lassie doing taking a weapon albeit loaded with blanks, into Sainsburys'. Has she no shame? Fortnums' certainly, Waitrose perhaps, but an officer in a shop for common people? Was it her batman's day off?

Oh, really. Surely it's obvious, old man? Part of the selec^H^H^H^H^Hexercise is to see if one can go into Sainsbury's without running out in horror or blushing and bimbling around in confusion drawing attention to oneself. There are times, in some lines of work, where sacrifices have to be made.

Of course, Sainsbex is an early exercise. A more demanding one comes later, for those outstanding few who get that far: yes, that. Kwiksave.

Maybe she should've gone to Asda.....
The self-administered smack on ma'am's ar$e would've alerted her to the missing shooter.

For cold weather training do they shop at Iceland?

or the BIGOT documents that turned up in a taxi

btw, the real training comes when you go to B&Q and have to improvise your own weapon out of various bits of hardware...then leave it in a hastily dug latrine.

So that was Operation Kwiksave that we saw at a certain police station in Basrah last month?

And don't forget the naval officer who left his work-filled laptop on a towpath or similar. It must have worked for him since isn't he now very, very highly-placed in the Senior Service?

As career moves go, leaving classified on a towpath as a Commander is obviously the way to go. You get to become Chief of Defence Intelligence later in life and then First Sea Lord!

I have every sympathy with the military personnel involved. She had the equipment with her because it was required and she made a simply mistake. That then got bumped up into a media event.

Those without sin.

I once took 4 rifles plus ammo out of stores in an unauthorised vehicle resulting in a Signal from London. There never was any consequence or threat but the hailstorm of official cow**** was a wonder to behold.

I suspect this woman was in training for a role deserving an incredible amount of respect far beyond that derived by the average officer or serviceman. A slip, a media splash and hopefully no fatal blow to a career.

Cheers

Most important of all, what does she look like?

I remember back to the GW, the classic when the ATO was left in a hotel room in Spain by a USAF type. I imagine his ass still hurts.

Well, somebody has released her name to the press, and her picture can be found on the MOD web site. Might I suggest somebody pull it? Perhaps someone can also suggest what purpose was served in releasing her name to the press, and in their publishing it?

The Times: Army loses assault rifle in exercise

An assault rifle capable of firing 700 rounds a minute has been lost by the Army — the second weapon its senior officers have misplaced this week. Nearly 900 troops searched for the SA80 rifle after a sergeant-major lost it during an exercise in the Brecon Beacons national park in Wales.

The embarrassing loss comes two days after Captain Alice Bromage left her handgun in a supermarket lavatory. Police yesterday arrested a man aged 20 from Ickleford, Hertfordshire on suspicion of theft by finding in connection with the incident.....

OK, fess up time ...

I never mislaid my weapon, in all my service, but I did "help" someone mislay his gat.

'Twas on an E and E in the Black Mountains, when Gary (who lost his life in the Duxford L39) and I were trying to get through a stop line in front of a choke point that we had to pass through.

A pair of Blues and Royals didn't see us approach them, in broad daylight. Rules of the game were that they could capture us if they covered us with a weapon at 25m. We were about 2m away when we jumped them. One was unarmed and ran away, the other had an SMG. After a tussle Gary got him in a full strangle hold, when he then surrendered to us. We took the SMG and dropped it in the long grass about 25m away to slow him down.

At endex Gary and I were summoned to the Training Major and the OC Hunter Force. TM gave us a large rollocking and told us to find the gun asap, and a big wink as we left.

Gary and I were told to find the Gazelle pilot, and within a minute of landing we had found the SMG. OC Hunter Force was quite relieved, I heard later.

Orac,

Just for you, a link with her picture is here with a write up that goes;

"TONY Blair sings the praises of Army girl Alice Bromage — who blundered by leaving her loaded gun in a supermarket toilet.

Captain Bromage, who is in her 20s, met the PM when he visited a base in the Gulf state of Oman in 2001.

She was said to be on an intelligence mission when she left her Sig Sauer 9mm in a disabled loo in Sainsbury’s in Hitchin, Herts.

She was tipped to work on top spying missions and surveillance operations — but her bungle could set her career back.

An MoD spokesman said: “It’s too early to say if anyone will face disciplinary action. The priority is to track down the missing gun.”"

What a brilliant cover story for a bit of spying work. You'd never think she'd get into the SIS now.

Just like the cover story in 'Who Dares Wins'.
