Vladimir is described in the Moscow Times as "a retired security services colonel who has sailed in a submerged submarine and has flown to Chechnya in a two-seater Su-27 fighter":

At least the leader of Russia has some military background, unlike our own unloved Trust-me-Tone.

What relevance does past military service have in the leader of a civilian government BEags?

If you think that he might have avoided getting involved in GW2, I doubt it would have made any difference at all.

Nothing at all when you're making decisions about tax increases. But when it involves taking one's country to war, I think it matters a great deal.

Surely Not.

Your profile doesn't give any clues as to whether you are or were serving at some stage in your life.

As you ask the question you probably aren't or have not. In which case what are you doing here?

Space prevents, but a reply would include words like honesty, integrity, trustworthy etc - these qualities not in the job spec for PM.

Those of you who want to know if I have ever served in the Armed Forces............. no I haven't (unless 12 months in the Air Training Corps counts!).

I have worked closely with the Armed Forces, but not in a conflict area. I quite often visit this forum, and it never occurred to me that this forum was a secret society to which outsiders were barred. Now remind me, my taxes pay for what??

240 and below understands my point. A leader of a civilian Govt has so called experts who proffer advice based on years of experience in their specialist areas.

I look forward to visiting again, and seeing you military peeps on the other areas of this web site.

Does being in the KGB and later head of FSB count as military now?

There is at least one civilian government whose leader is also, by definition, the leader of their armed forces.

and if that's the best example for having an ex military man leading, then I'll stick with civvies thanks

Interesting thought that BEags must have voted Lib Dem when Paddy was leader, as Paddy was very much ex services.

I voted Lib Dem beacuse my brother was standing for parliament as a Lib Dem MP. Didn't get in, but heavy damage to the Liarbor and Tory candidates....
